It’s dusk and the fireworks are starting in Barrington as I write. We couldn’t make it this year. Our kids are too little and, after a long weekend, we’re exhausted.
But as I hear the fireworks over Barrington High School in the distance, one of my favorite songs comes to mind. The lyrics were first written as a poem and date back to 1895, and there’s something about the melody that always moves me.
For spacious skies, amber waves, purple mountains, fruited plains, alabaster cities and from sea to shining sea, Happy Fourth of July!
