There’s not a lot in life that comes free, not even at Barrington’s Sidewalk Days. But Barrington shoppers will find one thing for free this weekend—local businesses collecting recyclable items.

Barrington Sidewalk Days, celebrating its 33rd downtown event July 29th through July 31st, features local retailers and artisans set-up along The Foundry on Route 14, the Ice House Mall on Applebee Street and in the downtown Village of Barrington. Other shops along Route 14 and Route 59 are also participating.  This village-wide collaborative event has shopping and activities for everyone of every age to promote businesses in the 60010 zip code.

The major sponsor of the Barrington Sidewalk Days, the Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce (BACC) will temporarily move their office just for this weekend’s events to a BACC information booth located outside McGonigal’s Pub at 105 South Cook Street. At their information booth they’ll have a Back to School Drive, collecting school supplies for students in need, maps and directions to shoppers’ favorite shops and restaurants and they will also hand out FREE 60010 Coupon Booklets filled with discount coupons from local merchants.

Three years ago the BACC started to use this event to support advocacy and education about recycling. “We want Sidewalk Days to be not only a family affair, but also to have a purpose,” Commerce President Janet Meyer said.  And this year the theme continues with “green festivities” beginning on Thursday July 29th at the BACC tent with the interactive presentation “Take Care of Our Earth.” The aim of the presentation is to teach children about recycling but the information can be used by anyone.

Also on Thursday July 29th, and continuing on Friday July 30th, Douglas Automotive Inc., located at 312 South Hager Avenue, will be taking used motor oil and batteries – car batteries and AA batteries alike – to be disposed of properly.  Douglas Automotive pays for the safe removal of all their oil but, in the cold months, burns the waste oil to save on heating costs.

Barrington Bank & Trust Co. takes this opportunity to promote their year round cell phone collection. You can deposit that old iPhone at the bank at 201 South Hough Street anytime this weekend and then go out and purchase that iPhone 4.

Dormant televisions, business and personal computers, however, should be saved for Vintage Tech Recyclers.  They specialize in disposing computer equipment, removing all software and data from the device to ensure the previous user’s safety. Nearly 60% of all electronics can be reused and 38% can be recycled back to it’s original raw state. Vintage Tech Recyclers, along with Women In Need Growing Strong (WINGS) collecting clothing and housewares, will be positioned under the BACC tent Saturday, July 31st.

Barrington Sidewalk Days starts Thursday, July 29th from 10am to 6pm, continues Friday, July 30th from 10am to 6pm and finally concludes on Saturday, July 31st from 9am to 4pm.  It’s a great weekend to recycle and shop, and don’t forget to pick up your FREE 60010 Coupon Booklet at the BACC tent in front of McGonigal’s Pub at 105 South Cook Street.
