Happy New Year

There’s something so exciting about fresh starts. And I’m welcoming 2011 with all of the energy that comes with new beginnings.

Happy New Year

But, at this time of year, I’m always reminded that new beginnings often start with an ending. And that, to me, is what’s so hauntingly beautiful about the popular New Year’s Eve song, “Auld Lang Syne”. It’s s a Scottish poem written by Robert Burns in 1788 and set to the tune of a traditional folk song.

Should old acquaintance be forgot,

and never brought to mind ?

Should old acquaintance be forgot,

and old lang syne ?

CHORUS:

For auld lang syne, my dear,

for auld lang syne,

we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,

for auld lang syne.

And surely you’ll buy your pint cup !

and surely I’ll buy mine !

And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,

for auld lang syne.

The lyrics are old fashioned, but the meaning transcends the times and communicates the warmth of starting new by toasting to old friends and times gone by. Happy New Year!
