Frozen Zucchini Snowshoe Race in Barrington, Illinois

If you can’t beat the winter weather, why not have a little fun with it! The first annual “Frozen Zucchini Snowshoe Adventure” is happening at 10AM this Sunday, January 30th, at Ron Beese Park in Barrington. The name is perfect for this 5K race through the snow because its purpose is to support the Barrington Smart Farm’s community gardening initiative.

The “Smart Farm” is a group of local gardeners who grow fruits and vegetables in a community garden behind the fields at Ron Beese Park to donate to the Cuba Township food pantry. They also work to teach people about gardening, agriculture and the benefits of green living.

We’ve written about Smart Farm twice before here at 365Barrington.com. The group made #7 and #171 on our list of 365 Things to do in Barrington and you can read both of those posts by clicking HERE and HERE.

Organizers hope this weekend’s Frozen Zucchini Snowshoe Adventure will raise awareness about and help pay for Smart Farm’s programs while offering people a unique way to enjoy the winter weather.  Snowshoes rentals are available, but they recommend that you sign up in advance. You can register and rent snowshoes online by clicking HERE and you can pick up your packets in person until 9PM today or from noon until 4PM tomorrow at Erehwon Mountain Outfitter in Kildeer. You’ll find Erewhon at 20505 N. Rand Road in Kildeer, you’ll find Ron Beese Park at 80 Rotary Drive in Barrington and you can learn more about the Smart Farm on their website at SmartFarms.org.
