American Cancer Society More Birthdays Campaign

There’s something really BIG happening in Barrington 130 days from today. It’s all about coming together as a community.  It’s all about watching more people celebrate more birthdays. It’s all about helping people with cancer survive. I’ve never been part of a “Relay for Life” before. But today I’m jumping into this campaign and hoping you might join me.

American Cancer Society More Birthdays Campaign

“A world with less cancer is a world with more birthdays.” That’s the idea behind this year’s American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Barrington’s relay is happening on Friday, June 10th, 2011 at Barrington High School Stadium. All of the money raised will help the American Cancer Society fund cancer research and campaigns that help with cancer detection, treatment and prevention. Sounds like a good cause to me!

So I spent a little time on the Barrington Relay for Life website this morning and decided to start a 365 Barrington Team. I’ve never started a team like this before and I’ll be about EIGHT MONTHS PREGNANT when this relay happens. But I promise I’ll take some laps at good old BHS Stadium, big belly and all! Here’s how it works and what’s happening TONIGHT…

On Relay day, participants will drop by the stadium, walk or run a few laps and even be there to watch several cool traditions take place. The Relay will start with a “Survivors Lap” where cancer survivors will circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories we’ve achieved over cancer. After dark, the “Luminaria Ceremony” will take place where candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer. Participants will walk a lap in silence to remember loved ones lost to the disease. (Why am I crying? Must be those pesky pregnancy hormones acting up again.) Last, there is a “Fight Back Ceremony” where we make a personal commitment to save lives by taking up the fight against cancer.

So here’s the scoop. There’s a Barrington Relay for Life kickoff meeting happening TONIGHT (January 31) at Chessie’s 111 Grille in the Ice House Mall at 7PM. It’ll be a great way to meet other participants and find out how to take part by starting a team, joining a team or simply making a donation. You’ll find 111 Grille at 200 Applebee Street in Barrington. You’ll find Barrington’s Relay for Life Facebook page by clicking HERE. And you’ll find lots of great info on their website at RelayForLifeBarrington.com.

If you’ve never participated in an event like this and want to check it out along with me, if you’d like to make friends through 365Barrington.com or if you’d be willing to team up with the pregnant girl, you’ll find “Team 365 Barrington” by clicking HERE or HERE.  We’d love to get to know you and hope you’ll help us come out for the community and celebrate more birthdays in Barrington.
