11. Find Spring Treasures at Ice House Antique Show

Find Antiques in Barrington, Illinois

Somehow I’ve trained my two-year-old to say “It’s a happy day!” first thing when she wakes up. She shouts this out at the first signs of sunlight, even if it’s dark, stormy and I feel like crawling back into bed. But today, it really LOOKS like a happy day. The sun is shining (at least for now), the forecast calls 70 degrees and I feel like getting outside and planting something in the garden. But first, I’m heading over to the third annual Spring Antique and Garden Show at the Ice House Mall. It’s happening all day today and tomorrow and there are treasures to be found that are sure bring some sunshine into your own home or garden.

2. Nominate Barrington’s 2011 Citizen of the Year

Barrington 2011 Citizen of the Year Award

It’s National Volunteer week and, if there’s one thing I’ve learned since moving to Barrington, it’s that ours is a community filled with endless opportunities to help others.  There are hundreds of organizations championing countless causes, powered by thousands of volunteers who are changing lives.  It reminds me of a beautiful image from one of my great grandmother’s favorite poems, Drop a Pebble in the Water, about words and deeds that make a difference.

Drop a pebble in the water:  just a splash, and it is gone;

But there’s half-a-hundred ripples circling on and on and on,

Spreading, spreading from the center, flowing on out to the sea,

And there is no way of telling where the end is going to be…

Barrington 2011 Citizen of the Year Award

There are many who pitch in, but is there ONE PERSON in Barrington who inspires you most with their outstanding contributions to our community? Do you know anyone who gives of themselves generously, tirelessly and without expectation? If you do, then here’s a great chance to reward their work with the recognition they never seek, but so deserve.  Barrington’s 2011 “Citizen of the Year” will be named next month.  And the group that selects that person is asking us all to help by nominating worthy recipients.
