Grab a handful of change from that piggy bank before you run your errands today and tomorrow. The entire Barrington High School baseball team along with an army of kids and other volunteers in yellow vests will be out on Barrington street corners collecting money for Tag Days. It’s an annual two-day fundraiser to find a cure for ALS, a disease that’s taken the lives of many loved ones right here in Barrington.

Barrington Tag Days coordinator, Bob Lee, tells me that there will be about 150 volunteers collecting money, including members of six local families who’ve recently lost loved ones to ALS.

ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is often called Lou Gehrig’s Disease in North America, after the famous New York Yankees baseball player who was diagnosed with the disease in 1939. It is a fatal neuromuscular disorder that causes impaired speaking, swallowing and breathing, muscle wasting and eventually total paralysis and death. The fundraiser got its name because the of the term “Tag’s” reference to baseball and the act of touching others.

You’ll find the Tag Days volunteers in yellow vests collecting dollars and spare change in cans outside the grocery store and on busy Barrington street corners.  This is the only weekend this spring that Barrington High School’s baseball team has off, and they’re spending their free time collecting money for Tag Days.

You can support the team and their fellow volunteers by donating dollars, spare change or anything you can.  They say every little bit helps and they’re so appreciative of our contributions.  They hope to raise $15,000 these two days alone.  Last year, Barrington’s two-day Tag Days event was the most successful in the state.  They’re aiming high again this year and are hopeful the community pitches in because it’s a cause that hits so close to home and they strongly believe our contributions make a difference.
