139. Get Pumped for “Purple Heals” & the Relay for Life

Barrington’s Relay for Life is just over six weeks away and things are heating up around town this week as the community hops on board the Relay’s “Purple Heals” campaign, starting with a major local shopping and dining event this Thursday night.

If you’ve seen posters with a giant purple heel posted around town, it’s the symbol for “Purple Heals”, a series of three upcoming shopping and social events in Barrington where participating merchants are offering a portion of their proceeds to support Barrington’s Relay coming up in June. But you don’t have to wear sky high stilettos to take part. These events are designed for shoppers and diners to enjoy Barrington’s best boutiques, restaurants and bars while supporting a great local cause. So mark your calendars…we can tell by the Facebook buzz that these events are going to be HOT!…

138. Barrington EATS: Chef Kelly Donlea’s Olive Tap Tip

138. Barrington EATS: Chef Kelly Donlea’s Olive Tap Tip

I’ve long enjoyed going to Pasquesi Home and Gardens in Barrington for unique houseware items, when I need to buy a gift and, of course, for my flowers and gardening supplies. Now I enjoy it for one more reason – it helps me make great food by carrying products by the Olive Tap.

The Olive Tap Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar emporium, located in Long Grove, has gotten me hooked on using their delicious oils and vinegars to make the salads from my 30 Spectacular Salads cookbook and many other dishes. I work with the Olive Tap often, creating great pairings with their oils and vinegars and my foods and demoing them at various events. The only problem is, when I run out, I don’t always have time for a trip to Long Grove…

The Evanston-based developers handling the Hough-Main project say their plans include between six and ten shopping and dining options on the first floor, with office tenants on the upper floors of the three story building planned for the  2.7 acre site.  Village officials say the developer is talking with multiple interested parties, but no announcements have been made about who will set up shop in the new building. This project is just one of several items on tonight’s Town Hall agenda. Here is the full list of topics they plan to discuss…

A record breaking number of votes came in for our Spring Break 2012 photo contest and we’re excited to announce today that we have THREE WINNERS! 51 percent of the almost 600 votes cast were for a photo called “Baby’s First Spring Break” taken by local photographer, Emily Hernandez. Emily takes the top prize in our contest, for the second year in a row! And with a wee one in the family, the Hernandez family chose to celebrate spring break right here at home.

First Place – “Baby’s First Spring Break” by Emily Hernandez

The top prize in this year’s contest is a $50 gift card to spend at retail shops throughout Barrington that are among the 900+ members of the Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce. Chamber president, Janet Meyer, says she’s thrilled to see the prize go to someone who planned a spring break staycation right here in the Barrington area. 129. Get Hired at Heinen’s Fine Foods in Barrington

Things have been buzzing over at the Shops at Flint Creek in Barrington where Heinen’s Fine Foods plans to open it’s eighteenth grocery store this August. The 82-year-old, family-owned company has 17 stores in and around Cleveland, but the Barrington location is their first venture outside Northeast Ohio. Construction at the new store is well underway and, for the first time today, Heinen’s is announcing details about their plans to hire up to 110 people locally.

I spoke with Heinen’s HR Director, Judy Galant this afternoon who shared their recruitment timeline. The online application process officially begins next Tuesday, April 10th…

128. Help Restore Flint Creek for Earth Day

128. Help Restore Flint Creek for Earth Day

Want to make a difference this Earth Day? Then you and your kids won’t want to miss the Citizens for Conservation’s special Earth Day class  in Barrington this Saturday, April 7th. The best part about the class — it’s all outdoors!

To teach the importance of plant restoration, the volunteer group is inviting the public to help them restore Flint Creek Savanna South in Barrington. Because some cutting and lifting brush is involved to make room for native vegetation, participants are encouraged to bring their own work gloves, insect repellent, pruners or loppers (it’s O.K. if you have to look it up!). Citizens for Conservation also recommend wearing closed-toe shoes, socks, long pants and long-sleeved shirts.

As a reward for their hard work, kids will receive an educational poster showing native prairie plants, mammals, birds and insects that make a restored woodland and prairie their home. On top of that, there will be marshmallows for roasting on a bonfire and fifty free Sonic Slushies waiting for them after they’ve finished reviving the Barrington creek–Is there any better way to celebrate an accomplishment?

Armed with cameras and a little beautiful scenery, the photographers in this year’s Spring Break photo contest captured stunning images that let your mind drift with memories of what true relaxation feels like. The challenge in this year’s contest was simple:  In a photograph, show what spring break 2012 looked like to you. Here’s one of the photos that best answers that question for me.  No beach.  Just a boy and a moose…

Billy and the Moose

We received beautiful images for our contest this year and need your help with choosing our winners. To cast your vote, just put checks in the boxes by your favorite photos below. The image that gets the most votes will win our 2012 Spring Break photo contest and we have awards for three winners….

125. Barrington EATS: Easter Brunch & Lovely Leftovers

In my opinion, the two best things about any holiday are family time and food.  And Easter is no exception. Traditions run rampant on Easter tables with lamb cakes and butter, family-favorite potato dishes, and more likely than not, hard boiled eggs and Easter ham.

Following are many, many ways to eat this Easter, which include making your own ham, ordering a pre-sliced honey baked ham, enjoying brunch in many unexpected places in Barrington and then using your leftovers to make breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Eat up Barrington!
