To learn a little more about their selection, we recently talked turkey with company co-owner Tom Heinen and learned that they offer shoppers seven brands of turkeys to choose from, including three fresh and four frozen turkey options.

Post 200 - AmishTurkeyThough there is still great demand for their frozen Butterball, Honeysuckle and Kosher turkeys, Tom says demand for premium fresh, all-natural, farm-raised turkeys has grown significantly.

“60% of our turkeys are fresh turkeys.  That was probably inverted twenty years ago.”

Heinen’s most popular turkey is their Amish farm raised turkey available in 2 lb. ranges from 10-26 lbs.

“I think shoppers believe the Amish people put a little more care into what they grow and raise and I think that’s right.”

But Tom says a large segment of customers are choosing their fresh Ohio raised, all-natural, corn-fed, antibiotic free and free range Bowman and Landes Turkey at Thanksgiving, a choice he calls the “Cadillac” piece of their turkey selection.

“With these fresh Bowman and Landes turkeys, the texture and flavor are what I would say are distinctively better.  They’re bred differently and raised very humanely to be a premium turkey.”

The turkeys are raised in the open air and sunshine on the 2200 acre Bowman and Landes turkey farm in New Carlisle, Ohio. It’s a fourth generation family farm founded in 1948.

“I think it goes back to the priority we place on knowing our sources.  We love working with small farmers and these Bowman and Landes turkeys fit perfectly with what we are looking to provide our customers.”
