It can be hard to keep up with what is acceptable in fashion as rules and trends are constantly changing, but one thing is for sure, rules are meant to be broken. Check out these 4 basic fashion rules that are definitely meant to be broken: Don’t wear black and brown or black and navy, Don’t wear white after Labor Day, Don’t wear certain colors out of their season (keep pastels and brights for Spring and Summer), Always match your shoes, belt and bag.

Gone are the days of DON’T!  We say it’s definitely time to break the “old” rules and embrace fashion…

4 Fashion Rules that are Meant to be Broken

Wearing black and brown or black and navy

Black looks chic when paired with either brown or navy! They are all classic, neutral colors and that is why they work together. We love a brown tunic and a black legging or a black legging and a brown boot.

Wearing white after summer

Labor Day is no longer a day that we are told to pack up all of our white, not to be seen until Memorial day. The once ruled “summer only” color is now making appearances all year round. If you’re quite not ready to break this rule, try easing into it by wearing different shades of white like an ivory or cream. A winter white fisherman’s sweater or a wool coat are perfect items to add to your wardrobe this season. If you’re still not sold, add a fall scarf and some boots and we promise you’ll love this trend by Fall’s end.

Wearing color any time of the year

We used to think that we could never wear bright colors or pastels in the Fall, but that is far from true now. Today we are seeing so many brighter hues in fall tops, dresses, skirts and accessories or luxurious Fall knits in soft shades of pastels. We are even seeing floral prints making a comeback again this fall. Since we all know that winter is sneaking upon us and those dark, cold and snowy days are not far off, don’t be afraid to brighten them up with a pop of color and some floral prints, we simply can’t go six months without seeing flowers!

Matching your shoes, bag, and belt

The rule that you have to match your bag and shoes may have been true in the past, but now it can actually make an outfit look dated. We think that mixing things up looks fresh and trendy, and adds interest to an outfit. We don’t expect you to go crazy; it can be as easy as mixing and matching neutrals, for instance pairing a light gray handbag with a brown belt and a nude shoe. We also love mixing patterns and textures with neutrals as well! As we discussed last week animal print is big this season and is the perfect accent piece for any look. If you wear an animal print shoe you can pair it with any bright color or neutral color handbag.

Hopefully all of this will help you this season and the seasons to come. Don’t be afraid to be a rule breaker!
