Now that warmer temps are finally here, it’s time to give our lawns a little TLC! After a winter of up-and-down temps and a cool start to spring, our lawns need some support to ensure a healthy growing season ahead.

Jonathan Green, a sixth-generation company, uses all-natural, food-grade ingredients to produce fertilizers that restore health to our grass and soil – rather than draining it as some traditional treatments might. By following Jonathan Green’s 4-step system, Jim Shoger says we’ll see our lawns become more dense, deepen in color and become naturally weed resistant. “The turf’s root structure becomes so deep and dense that there’s no room for weeds to grow.”
Jim says that most of us have lawns that are far too acidic, which makes them prime targets for weeds. “Grass grows best in a neutral pH of between 6.2 and 7,” Jim says. “Many lawns we test in the spring have a pH of 5.5 or lower. Weeds are just a symptom of that acidity – we need to treat the problem, not the symptom.” He says the first step to fix this is to apply a product like MAG-I-CAL, which is high in calcium and can raise soil’s pH from 5.5 to 6.5 in just 2 weeks.
Jim also recommends applying a Crabgrass Preventer now through the end of May to deter weeds from the start. “Unlike other products on the market, our Crabgrass Preventer contains both a pre-emergent and a post-emergent treatment. This means that even if you already have some weeds when you use it, it will still be very effective.”
Jim is so proud of the results he’s had on his own lawn that he sent us a photo – and we have to agree that it’s looking fabulous! He used Black Beauty grass seed, a proprietary Jonathan Green seed blend that he says is genetically superior to others on the market. “It’s dark, deep-rooted, insect-resistant, and holds moisture – everything you’re looking for in a grass.”
