Good Shepherd Hospital Honors Former Patient with Special Chicago Cubs Game Day Experience

1 min read

The Chicago Cubs are rolling out the red carpet during Saturday’s game for former Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital patient and local father-of-two, Brent Mason. To recognize Brent’s enduring spirit and unwavering support of his family after recent illness, the hospital has invited Brent’s children to be named Chicago Cubs Honorary Bat Kids, allowing them to visit with Cubs players in the dugout before they face the Mariners on July 30th.

Brent Mason never imagined he would go through a life-threatening situation not only once, but twice. One year ago, Brent was brought to the emergency room at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington with severe internal bleeding due to a lesion in his small intestine. The hemoglobin, which is a protein in red blood cells and responsible for transporting oxygen to the body, dropped dangerously low and Brent almost didn’t survive.

Fast forward one year later to this past June, and Brent found himself in the same situation. After two hospital stays, 24 days total spent in the hospital and over five procedures, Brent is healthy and living his life to the fullest with his family.

Brent credits the nurses at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital for never giving up on him and always looking to find solutions to his complicated case. “Brent has shown tremendous resiliency and strength as a patient,” says Ian Quinn, nurse and manager at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital. “He was a great partner in his care and never gave up.”

In recognition of Brent’s enduring spirit and the unwavering support of his family, Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital has invited Brent’s children, Ryan, 11, and Brooke, 6, to be named Chicago Cubs Honorary Bat Kids.

As Chicago Cubs Honorary Bat Kids, the Masons have the chance to visit the dugout, take photos with players, collect autographs and watch the pregame warmup from the bench when the Cubs face the Seattle Mariners. The game starts at 1:20 today at Wrigley Field. Congrats Mason family and GO CUBS!!!
