Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital continues to lead the way in breast cancer treatment by offering an innovative new procedure called Hidden Scar™ Breast Cancer Surgery, which helps surgeons treat cancer while preserving the natural appearance of the breast.

Hidden Scar™ Breast Cancer Surgery is an advanced surgical approach to lumpectomy and mastectomy where cancerous tissue is removed through a single incision made in an inconspicuous area, resulting in less visible scarring. Surgeons credit the Hidden Scar™ approach with helping them perform breast cancer procedures with better safety, efficiency, and precision – while optimizing clinical and aesthetic outcomes for patients.

In partnership with medical technology company Invuity, Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital recently hosted a mobile lab, training nearly twenty physicians on the surgery to make it even more widely available to women in and around the Barrington area.

Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital breast surgeon, Dr. Barry Rosen helped lead the recent training and says most women he sees in his practice are unaware of all the surgical options available.

post-1200-dr-barry-rosen-barrington“Hidden Scar™ surgery is an excellent option that can help restore a patient’s self-image and allow her to begin the emotional healing process,” Dr. Rosen says. “This minimally invasive treatment is one more tool in our comprehensive accredited breast program at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital.”

Good Shepherd’s new breast care center offers the latest in technology for breast cancer care including 3D mammography, hidden scar surgery, Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT) and reconstruction at the time of a mastectomy.  Now easily accessible at the main entrance of the hospital, it’s easy to get in and out and back to your life.

The Hidden Scar™ approach can be used with both lumpectomies and nipple sparing mastectomies. Qualification for the surgery depends on a patient’s tumor size and location, breast shape and size and the surgeon’s training.
