128. Help Restore Flint Creek for Earth Day

Want to make a difference this Earth Day? Then you and your kids won’t want to miss the Citizens for Conservation’s special Earth Day class  in Barrington this Saturday, April 7th. The best part about the class — it’s all outdoors!

To teach the importance of plant restoration, the volunteer group is inviting the public to help them restore Flint Creek Savanna South in Barrington. Because some cutting and lifting brush is involved to make room for native vegetation, participants are encouraged to bring their own work gloves, insect repellent, pruners or loppers (it’s O.K. if you have to look it up!). Citizens for Conservation also recommend wearing closed-toe shoes, socks, long pants and long-sleeved shirts.

As a reward for their hard work, kids will receive an educational poster showing native prairie plants, mammals, birds and insects that make a restored woodland and prairie their home. On top of that, there will be marshmallows for roasting on a bonfire and fifty free Sonic Slushies waiting for them after they’ve finished reviving the Barrington creek–Is there any better way to celebrate an accomplishment?

221. Go Inside Don Murphy’s Weathervane Workshop

Barrington Metra Station Weathervane

Sometimes the most interesting people happen to be our very own neighbors. They’re great talents who are living quietly among us and, in Don Murphy’s case, producing beautiful works of art privately at home. Don says he’s been called the “Last of the Mohicans”, one of the few people in the world creating custom copper weathervanes from intricate hand-carved designs. You might not recognize Don if you passed him on the street. But if you’ve ever been to Barrington’s Metra Station, you know his work.

180. Hold Your Breath for a Bears Win

Bears vs. Packers

There’s only one thing that die-hard NFL fans will be doing in Barrington tonight, and that’s tuning in for the Bears/Packers game at Soldier Field at 7:30.  And if you’re married to a Bears fanatic like I am, you’ll be praying that they win because you know how a big loss can set the tone for the entire week or, let’s face it, the whole season.

Bears vs. Packers

If you feel like getting out of the house for tonight’s game, there are some great football specials being offered at several Barrington hot spots tonight. Here are a few to choose from:

166. Shape Up with Sherry Hana

Fitness Guru Sherry Hana's Girls Nite Out

When it comes to exercise, one of my biggest challenges is staying motivated. I recently found a fitness expert in Lake Barrington who offers in-home personal training and specializes in helping busy women and moms get their exercise routines back on track. Her name is Sherry Hana, and this week, she’s hosting an evening of fun, healthy food, fitness tips and FREE MASSAGES at her own home.

Fitness Guru Sherry Hana's Girls Nite Out

I recently caught up with Sherry during a fitness session at the home of Marianne Swallie, of one of her clients in Cary. The cool thing is that you don’t need a finished basement or fancy fitness equipment, because Sherry will have all of the tools and expertise you need with her when she knocks on your front door.

Because I’ve have had two babies in the past three years, I’ve become a bit of a stranger to sushi.
