114. Chicago Film Crew Takes Over Canteen Restaurant for a Day

Post - Canteen Film Set - 18

Did you see the Canteen Restaurant with windows covered, shrouded in black curtains and surrounded by giant film production trucks spilling out onto Lake Street Wednesday? I logged onto Facebook in the morning and people were buzzing with speculation about what was going on inside. “Rumor has it that it’s for ‘Restaurant Makeover’,” one friend … Read more…

152. Eat, Drink and be Booky with Hip New Social Club

Post - Eat, Drink and Be Booky

There’s a new book club in town that’s a little more social than serious—which is perfect if you’re a reader who likes to enjoy a cocktail or two over discussions of plot and symbolism. “LIT” is the name of the Barrington Area Library’s brand new social book club for adults designed to let you have just that kind of light-hearted experience. And with a motto like “Eat, drink and be booky,” you’ll get exactly what you sign up for!

LIT
is an out-on-the-town kind of club that will be hosted at a variety of local restaurants instead of at the library. The first one will be held at Park Avenue Restaurant &Wine Bar from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. next Monday, May 21…

349. Celtic Fest in Bryan McGonigal’s Own Words

Post - Bryan McGonigal

McGonigal’s Pub is making it easy to be Irish in Barrington this week!  They’re hosting the community’s inaugural 2-day “Barrington Celtic Fest” starting on St. Patrick’s Day morning.  The pub is also celebrating their one year anniversary, so I thought it would be a great time to catch up with owner, Bryan McGonigal.  He’s a busy guy these days, but he took a quick break and found a comfortable seat at the bar.  With the bartender busy in the background and a pint of Guinness within easy reach, Bryan filled me in on the festival details and highlights from his first year in business.

The fest will run tomorrow and Friday from 10AM until 1AM featuring a great lineup of live Irish music, Irish dancers, Corned Beef, Cabbage, a full Irish menu, pints of beer, NCAA basketball tournament watching and plenty of people in green.  Admission is FREE and you’ll find the full festival entertainment lineup below. But first, here’s Bryan’s look at the fest and McGonigal’s first year, in his very own words.

306. Be Crowned the South Barrington Chili Champ

2011 Chili Champion at the South Barrington Arboretum

The results are in after Saturday’s “Chilly Challenge” Chili Cook-off in South Barrington. About 300 chili fans from in and around Barrington met at the South Barrington Arboretum Saturday afternoon to sample and vote for chili prepared by seven local restaurants.

2011 Chili Champion at the South Barrington Arboretum

I was one of the guest judges and snapped a few photos on the chili tour, which started at Pinstripes Bowling, Bocce & Bistro. A shuttle whisked the chili tasters off to all seven restaurants, which included Pinstripes, Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant, Nozuzmi Asian & Japanese Cuisine, Gold Class Cinemas, L’Eiffel Bistrot & Creperie, Panera Bread and defending 2010 Chili Champion, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse. That’s a lot of chili for only $10 and it was so much fun! Almost all of the participants cast ballots for their favorites at the very end and it was a very close vote. But the 2011 South Barrington Arboretum Chili Champion is…

267. On The Menu: Ambrosia Gingerbread Houses

Ambrosia Gingerbread Housese

It’s the eve of Christmas Eve and and I’ll be cooking for tomorrow’s family festivities late into the night.  With my favorite holiday foods on my mind and in my oven, I thought today would be the perfect day to debut a brand new feature we’ll regularly be running here at 365Barrington.com called “On the Menu”. To help showcase some of the finest culinary offerings here in Barrington, I’ll be talking to chefs at local restaurants to learn more about some of the most popular items from their menus. And I’m starting today with the amazing gingerbread houses you’ll only find at Ambrosia Euro American Patisserie in Barrington.

Ambrosia Gingerbread Housese

Ambrosia’s gingerbread houses are like edible works of art. They’re so masterfully crafted that Ambrosia’s owners, executive pastry chef, Richard Rivera and his wife Debby, only make 12 to 20 of these houses every year.
