Heinen’s Grocery, Cook Street Coffee and BHS-TV have all accepted 365Barrington’s ice bucket challenge to help raise awareness and funds for ALS. We nominated all three during Barrington’s Community Ice Bucket Challenge at the gazebo downtown last month.  They all stepped up to get soaked for the cause and we made sure to get all three ice bucket challenges on video.

Surrounded by his team of associates, General Manager Mark Vrtacnik took the challenge at Heinen’s Grocery during their Hatch Chile Roast outside the store on Saturday. Mark passed the challenge on to three additional Heinen’s associates, including the General Manager of their new Glenview store, Sharri Pieczynski, and the managers at two Heinen’s locations in Ohio.

Cook Street Coffee owner Mike Shipley convinced his team to take the challenge with him outside the café this week.

In addition to getting soaked for the cause, Cook Street Coffee is collecting donations for the Les Turner ALS Foundation at the café through this weekend which will be matched by the Barrington family that owns Stanley Machining and Tools Corp.

They’re also challenging customers to come and visit Cook Street Coffee this Sunday, September 14th, to support another great cause.  All donations they collect at the café on Sunday plus 10% of the day’s profits will be donated to the American Heart Association and this weekend’s McHenry County Heart Walk.  Thank you for accepting our challenge, Cook Street Coffee!

And we we didn’t know for sure, but had a hunch that BHS-TV teacher Jeff Doles would be a good sport and step up to get soaked for the cause.  His students, several of whom are part of our 365BarringtonTV crew, were more than happy to dump multiple buckets on Mr. Doles to help spread the challenge to even more people within the Barrington and BHS community.

If you’re not up for getting iced, there’s an easier way to support the cause and impact local efforts to find a cure for ALS.  Barrington’s team taking part in the upcoming Les Turner ALS Foundation Walk for Life is called Paul Launer’s Iron Horse Brigade.  They’re walking with and on behalf of Paul Launer, a Barrington father-of-two who was diagnosed with ALS in June of 2011.  The team currently consists of 179 members who will represent Barrington during the September 21st walk at Soldier Field.  As of today, their fundraising page shows they’ve raised over $125,000!!!

To help us get to know Paul Launer, the man who inspired the Iron Horse Brigade, Barrington photographer and film producer Thomas Balsamo created a series of touching videos from an on-camera interview with Paul.  In these videos, Paul shares his determination to make the most of each moment in life.
