On this day, January 20th in 1889, Leadbelly, (Huddi William Ledbetter), Blues musician, who wrote ‘Goodnight Irene’ and ‘The Rock Island Line’ was born. He’s also well known for popularizing Midnight Special, a traditional folk song thought to have originated among prisoners in the American South. Covered by Credence Clearwater Revival on their 1969 Willie and the Poor Boys album, The song refers to the passenger train Midnight Special and its “ever-loving light” which is reminiscent of imagery from gospel songs about the light of salvation. Now that’s something worth singing about!
