Wood Duck Update.
There are now two families of Wood Ducks on Long Slough (a.k.a. Vander Pool) at Flint Creek Savanna. One family has 8 ducklings and one has 16.
Clutch size averages 6-16, so 16 may be a normal clutch, but Wood Ducks also practice "egg dumping." Some females - often first-year breeders - follow another Wood Duck back to her nest box and deposit one egg a day while the original female is out foraging. This results in overly large clutches and decreases hatching success.
I once saw a pair of Wood Ducks sitting on top of the nest box I monitored and watched them fly away. I assumed the box was now empty, stuck my phone in the hole, and took a picture. There was a female on the nest, which makes me think the pair on top was egg dumping. Also, after the ducklings left the nest, there were 3 or 4 unhatched eggs remaining inside which suggests there were too many eggs, some of which failed to hatch. #woodduck #woodducks #woodduckducklings #ducklings #birding #citizensforconservation #365barrington #birdphotography #birdingphotography #nikonbirds #365barrington

Where: Corner of Lincoln and Cook Sts.
Who: Four fabulous Hough Street Elementary School Second Graders!!

These fine kiddos just went through First Communion together at St. Anne’s Church and are turning their focus on their community by raising awareness and taking donations for Foster Care Awareness month this May. They have had multiple lemonade/ homemade treat stands already this month and with multiple families pledging to match what they raise, these kids are motivated in their final stretch and hope to have as many people from the community come out to support this wonderful cause.
