There are many places where fathers and sons build their bond: on a baseball diamond, around a campfire, in a fishing boat at dawn. For Carlos Chacón and his son, Vincent, one of those places is the barbershop.
For the past five years, Carlos and Vincent have made a monthly ritual of getting spruced up at 18|8 Barrington. In honor of Father’s Day, the downtown men’s salon is giving away a classic haircut and shave package to one lucky father/son duo.

On a recent afternoon, I caught up with Carlos and Vincent at the barbershop.
“He was in a booster seat the first time I cut his hair,” said Emily, a master stylist and barber, after blow drying Vincent’s newly trimmed but still lengthy hair.
Vincent, fifteen and a soon-to-be sophomore at Saint Viator High School, is now pushing 6 feet tall.
“Yeah, some things have changed,” Carlos said later, looking up at his son. “He has much more hair than I do, too.”
But then, some things haven’t changed. They make their appointments back to back—both with Emily—and try to piggyback a sushi lunch at Shakou or at least a swing by Starbucks for a drink afterward.
Between school, sports, work, and travel, life is busy these days. Carlos said what he values most about their trips to the barbershop is that it’s an excuse to spend time and talk with his son, who is growing up fast.
The top-notch haircuts are a nice added bonus.
