Our origin story.
As a daughter of an Orthopedic Surgeon who founded the first sports medicine physical therapy clinic in Denver, Co; Jo Ann Graser’s childhood was steeped in proven, scientific approaches to movement and function. Her early years as a personal trainer were spent trying to figure out how to meld the worlds of fitness and physical therapy. These worlds often seemed at odds with their approaches to finding movement solutions for their clientele.
After working as a personal trainer in both corporate and boutique studio settings, Jo Ann discovered Pilates on a visit to Los Angeles. She found Pilates challenging, intriguing, but more importantly that elusive bridge between personal training and physical therapy.
After creating and building a successful Pilates program within a corporate fitness center, Jo left to start her own studio to work with clients and create a teacher training program.
Jo Ann’s goal was to create a safe, welcoming and nurturing space for individuals to gain and regain movement and function, while building strength and flexibility.
Tensile Strength Studio opened in 2008 and has become a destination for high quality, authentic Pilates in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago (Barrington, IL).
The mission of Tensile Strength Studio is to provide clients with cutting edge, high caliber Pilates and Fitness programming so they experience the life-changing benefits of improved fitness and ability.
