Advocate Health Debuts New Website Celebrating Nurses

Home Newsroom Advocate Health Debuts New Website Celebrating Nurses

Advocate Health just launched a new website at AdvocateNurse.com devoted to celebrating and supporting its nurses. What a special way to honor the men & women who are such a treasured source of knowledge and comfort in the medical setting!

In addition to reaching out to the nursing community, Advocate’s new website and corresponding campaigns offer us all an opportunity to join the conversation about nurses who’ve touched our lives.

One of the first nurses to be featured at AdvocateNurse.com is one of our own right here in Barrington. On Advocate Health’s social media pages, they introduce us to Heidi, an oncology nurse who’s been working at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital for 5 ½ years.

Here’s why Heidi was drawn to nursing and what she has learned from her work, in her own words…

“I have been a nurse for 24 years and have wanted to be a nurse since I was 3 years old. My passion in life is caring for others! I truly love being an oncology nurse. I have worked as an inpatient nurse, outpatient chemotherapy nurse, worked in clinical research…all in oncology. Now I am privileged to put my knowledge and experience together as an oncology nurse navigator. Working with patients, families and caregivers to provide education, support, resources and encouragement is a true joy and gift. I am blessed to have a career which I am passionate about.”

“I have learned so much from my patients and feel blessed to be a part of their team as they journey through a cancer diagnosis, treatment and survivorship. I was working in clinical research for new oncology medications at the time I heard about the “breast health specialist” role (the name at that time). I really missed working with patients…I had been away from patient care for 18 months. Life in a cubicle was not my style – I need to be with patients and their families…to help, support, teach, comfort and love them! So I took a leap and applied – and what a blessing it has been! The role has become a women’s health navigator, in which I work with all breast and gynecology oncology cancer patients during their continuum of care.”

Advocate says Heidi is just one small part of a photo campaign they are sharing on their social media accounts every week with hashtag #IAmAdvocate.

“It’s the nurses by our patient’s bedside, the physicians, the volunteers at the front desk, the engineers in the basement, the pharmacists, the techs, the housekeepers, the cooks, and everyone in-between. Stay tuned for more photos and stories from our associates, nurses, physicians and clinicians across our health care system.”

Designed for Advocate nurses, AdvocateNurse.com features nursing news, upcoming events, professional development programs and more. But their campaigns allow all of us an opportunity to participate.

“Perhaps the most hurtful impact of the stigma surrounding mental illness is the common belief that women with mental illness cannot be good mothers. In a society that values ‘self-sacrificing mothers’ and rewards adherence to gender norms, we often deem that a ‘good mother’ has few needs and challenges of her own; rather, she can commit herself in her entirety to her children.

Mental illness can certainly make some aspects of motherhood more challenging, but it doesn’t disqualify those of us living with a mental health condition from being good parents. In fact, research suggests that many issues faced by mothers with mental illness are generic to all parents. While mothers with mental illness may experience more unique challenges from their symptoms, or from medication and treatment obligations, these risks can be managed with the guidance of a good collaborative care team.”
