Barrington Giving Day (BGD) started over 80 years ago originally as a way to give back to families in our community in December. However, the program has continued to expand and help families at other times during the year. With help from generous donors and volunteers, they provide necessities to children and their families within the Barrington 220 School District who either qualify as low-income or are experiencing a hardship.

“As a way to provide a year-round service to families in need in our community, Barrington Giving Day launched our Spring Event. At this event, families receive boxes of non-perishable food to help with food insecurity, books to support summer reading as well as shoes, clothing, sports equipment, toys, electronics and much more.” said Dori Hough, Executive Director/BGD.

The BGD Donation Center is located at 310 James Street in Barrington and is accepting donations from Wednesday 4/20 – Sunday 4/24 from 9:00am-1:00pm.

BGD will be accepting donations for new or gently used clean items such as clothes & shoes, books, sports equipment, toys/bikes, etc.

There are many Barrington Giving Day volunteer opportunities available for this month to get involved and make a positive impact on local families.

About the Barrington Area Volunteer Connection

Barrington Giving Day is part of the Barrington Area Volunteer Connection (BAVC. Launched in January of 2021, the BAVC was developed via a partnership between Barrington Area Development Council and the Barrington Area Library. BAVC’s goal is to bring all 100+ Barrington area nonprofits, churches and service organizations in one searchable database so that volunteers can easily find opportunities. The foundation of BAVC is a volunteer match platform called Get Connected which serves as a clearinghouse to bring together organizations, volunteers, and collaborators to match volunteer interests with nonprofits needing assistance. GetConnected also offers organizations optional features such as easy record keeping of volunteer hours, as well as mobile check in and shift reminders and other ways to communicate with volunteers. “So, how can we humanize who we are addressing and make sure that people have proper access to mental health care? How can we use what we know to change how we talk about mental health? How can changing the narrative impact the reality?

Open dialogue is only helpful if we can share the truth. We can start talking about the reality of depression as it is, a legitimate medical condition that causes sadness, loss of interest and potentially feeling as if life is not worth living. It is a condition, not a weakness, that typically requires long-term mental health treatment.”
