Ten years ago Hope’s In Style was planned as a single event to raise funds for one home at the Potter’s House in Guatemala. Since its initial year, the organization has grown into an official 501(c)3 organization. The first show was held at the Garlands and raised about $15,000. This year, it will be held at Avante Banquets in Fox River Grove and co-founders, Courtney McGovern & Ashley Quigleys’ goal is to raise $75,000. Here’s what they say about the impact events like Hope’s In Style have on their mission.
What impacts have you made since that time to Potter’s House, local students, etc.?
Since the start of HOPE’S IN, we have helped to build 43 homes, bring down over 475 local volunteers, treated over 800 patients, and established a medical endowment fund that is over $100k and has granted more than $23k to Guatemalan medical initiatives.
How have volunteers have helped grow Hope’s In and the mission?
Our volunteers have been vital to HOPE’S IN’s work and mission and we have worked alongside hundreds of student volunteers at the fashion show.
The core group of students that lead and run the event are local Barrington High School HOPE’S INterns! These students are extremely dedicated and work year round to make the event a success. We have seen students gain leadership skills and make a big impact in the world all while inspiring our local community to develop the next generation of humanitarians.
Additionally, because of our volunteers we are able to actually build the homes during our summer trips. Over the past few years we have also begun forming committees of experts within our own community that can host trainings and shape the programming we have in Guatemala. These experts include special educators, like Liz Robbins at Barrington High School, who hosts quarterly trainings for the special educator we sponsor in Guatemala. Or, people like Dr. Lavanya Shankar who has helped craft the medical programming for the teenage mothers in our Fortaleza program.

Can you share any highlights for this year’s show?
This year’s show is very special for HOPE’S IN as it is our 10th year anniversary since doing our first Hope’s In Style. For our show this year we plan to share 10 different stories from HOPE’S IN programs and alumni. These stories aim to show not only the impact we’ve been able to make over the past 10 years but how much our organization has grown.

About the Barrington Area Volunteer Connection
Hope’s In is part of the Barrington Area Volunteer Connection (BAVC). Launched in January of 2021, the BAVC was developed via a partnership between Barrington Area Development Council and the Barrington Area Library. BAVC’s goal is to bring all 100+ Barrington area nonprofits, churches and service organizations in one searchable database so that volunteers can easily find opportunities. The foundation of BAVC is a volunteer match platform called Get Connected which serves as a clearinghouse to bring together organizations, volunteers, and collaborators to match volunteer interests with nonprofits needing assistance. GetConnected also offers organizations optional features such as easy record keeping of volunteer hours, as well as mobile check in and shift reminders and other ways to communicate with volunteers.
