The Barrington Youth Dance Ensemble’s 2014 performance of The Nutcracker opens for it’s 20th season Friday, December 19th, and they’re excited to present something brand new for this weekend’s performances.  The show’s sets were completely redesigned for this year’s production thanks to a generous grant from the Barrington Area Community Foundation.

The previous sets were about 12 years old and we’re told the new sets, designed by Jim Estes and built by John Tilford, showcase the scenes and dancers beautifully.

Guest artists from National and Chicago regional dance companies, including River North Dance Chicago, Giordano Dance Chicago, and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago are perform lead soloist roles during this weekend’s performances, joined by more than 80 student dancers from the Northwest Chicago suburbs.

The Nutcracker will run from December 19-21, 2014 at Barrington High School, 616 West Main Street in Barrington, Illinois. Ticket prices range from $15.00 to $28.00. You can click here to purchase tickets online or they will also be available at the door.

Also, don’t miss Clara’s Tea at 12:30 before Saturday’s matinee performance. It’s the perfect holiday event for children age 3 to 10 and their families to meet some of the characters and learn more about the Nutcracker story before watching the show. The price of admission for Clara’s Tea is $10 per child.

Jennifer Goodman, known for her 16 year tenure with the Joffrey Ballet, will guest star for the first time with BYDE as the Sugar Plum Fairy in this weekend’s Nutcracker performances. Since 2009, Ms. Goodman has had a successful freelance career and has performed with Ballet NY, Ballet X, The Met, Lyric Opera, Chicago Opera Theater, and Dallas Opera.

Isabella Stojka of South Barrington and Alexandra Ebert of Barrington will share the role of Clara, The Nutcracker’s heroine. “Every little girl who dances in the Nutcracker dreams about being Clara one day,” says Ms. Ebert. “I feel so blessed to have my dream come true this year!”

Additional student performers from the area include Mackenzie Jaekel of Lake Zurich, who will play the Snow Queen in the ballet’s delightful Snow Scene, and Megan Clement of Barrington and Hannah Harris of Lake Barrington Barrington, who will share the role of the Dew Drop Fairy. Juliana Nikolich and Victoria Van Hollen, both of Lake Barrington, will share the role of the Fairy Angel, who Clara meets in the magical Land of the Sweets.

Also taking the stage will be these dancers from the Barrington area:

Mary Boehm, Madeleine Carroll, Lauren Chon, Morgan Chon, Erin Chon, Meghan Doran, Elizabeth Fitzgerald, Yasmin Glazov, Lana Homola, Kate Howell, Angelina Kloczkowski, Molly Knecht, Kiri Kolasinski, John Kolasinski, Kyra O’Brien, Mikayla Patten, Maggie Pechan, Abby Richmond, Emma Richmond, Maya Schulze, Alexandra Skopek, Scout Storms, Sailor Streeter, Ava Thome, Claire Thome, Secilia Vega, Tatianna Vega, and Whitney Mall; South Barrington: Natalie Bertoglio, Devon DeLeon, and Ella Londergan; Barrington Hills: Elizabeth Ballot, Anna Lami, Emma Landenberger, Caroline Rees, and Georgina Spence; Lake Barrington: Natalie Abrahamson, Rose Abrahamson, Martha Abrahamson, Hope Carper, Hayley Carper, Tiffany Frankel, Hayden Harris, Caroline Jensen, Sasha Rice, and Eliza Seagrist.

Hi guys! Today's Word of the Day is a total divergence from anything we've covered before -- 鳄梨 è lí - avocado!

That's right, we might just be exploring some foods over the next few days, starting with the beautiful avocado. Incidentally, 鳄 è means "alligator," and 梨 lí means "pear," making the bumpy-skinned Persea americana an "alligator pear" in popular usage 🙃

Oh -- speaking of food -- did we mention that we'll be having a meeting this Wednesday at 4:30? We'll be making fried rice -- you should probably grab those ingredients before they are sold out from all the stores due to popular demand for participation in this meeting! 😂 Recipe can be found on our GroupMe -- message here, email Ms. Stumpf, talk to a friend... the possibilities are endless for you to get the word! 😁
