Barrington’s only Mexican restaurant, La Mesa is located at 243 W. Northwest Highway. Hector says their top sellers year-round are burritos and tacos along with their quesedillas and enchiladas with your choice of meats, fillings and sides. The menu also features shrimp tacos inspired by the small shrimp charales tacos which are popular near Hector’s childhood home in Mexico.
Here’s a tip: For an extra kick, regulars at the restaurant know to ask for a serving of Hector’s homemade Escabeche, or Mexican Giardiniera, which is a mix of pickled jalapenos, onions and carrots in a huge jar behind the bar. Hector says diners love the blend of spices and vinegar with chips or on top of their entree of choice.
And don’t forget to order a margarita while you’re there! La Mesa’s margaritas have a great, tart and tangy taste with a hint of citrus flavor and pair perfectly with your favorite dishes.
I first wrote about La Mesa back on Cinco de Mayo in 2010 and, by the way, I still think Hector looks a little like Antonio Banderas. But don’t take my word for it! Stop by La Mesa for a Mexican feast and don’t forget to tell Hector that Liz sent you ;).
