Grab your friends, ladies! It’s now possible to have beautiful, professionally styled hair in between your regular salon appointments. Ten Friends Blow Dry & Style House recently opened at Deer Park Town Center, and they invited two friends, Jenna Shields and Danielle Thome, to come in and experience their Signature Blow Dry & Style, or blowout. We came along for the fun.
Ten Friends owner Cathleen Stoelting greeted Danielle and Jenna when they arrived and explained that she likes her clients to think of Ten Friends as a sophisticated version of your grandma’s corner beauty shop. “Ten Friends is a place to gather with your friends, relax, connect and laugh.”
Offering hair styling services, including blowouts, up dos, keratin smoothing treatments and prescriptive conditioning treatments, Ten Friends creates an experience to specifically meet each clients’ needs. Whether it be for a special occasion, a pampering treat or a professional who needs a style several times a week, Ten Friends offers five-star service in a convenient and relaxing environment.
“Our primary focus is providing an amazing shampoo, blow dry & style, in a warm, welcoming and pampering environment. There’s nothing like getting your hair professionally styled to brighten your day and make you feel good about yourself. And we firmly believe that when you look good and feel good about yourself, there’s absolutely no limit to the amazing things you’ll accomplish.”
During a typical styling appointment, guests are treated to two shampoos and conditioner, with a comforting hot towel on their neck as part of the service. Every stylist consults with clients about their style goals and they’ll even make recommendations based on the latest looks in hair and makeup.
Is the style for work? A special event? Just a special treat? Each of the ten styling stations has an Inspiration Gallery booklet offering guidance on choosing a style. You can go from “sleek & sassy” one day to “beachy waves” the next.
The beautiful new space (right next door to lucy Activewear) features 10 blow-dry stations, a complete brow and lash bar, hair for special events plus makeup AND will be available for private parties! Ten Friends features the Davines “sustainable beauty” line of farm-to-shower naturally derived products, from Parma, Italy.
Client Jenna Shields, who requested the natural volume style, said her hair felt “so shiny, smooth and healthy” after her service. “It felt so great. I also appreciated that my stylist asked me what I do to my hair, then she offered her own assessment.”
Most styling sessions last 45 minutes and are a flat rate of $40. “Up-do” styles can range a little higher in price and they do offer a “half-pint” service for children 12 and under for $30.
With a career in corporate America and a background in management and hospitality, Cathleen wanted do something with her “second career” that was uplifting, empowering and fun. From this philosophy, Ten Friends was born. Cathleen’s attention to detail and commitment to service are evident throughout the style house – from the carefully selected menu of fine wines to creating a culture that dotes on the customer.
“Ten Friends is a place that is friendly to come to – a place where the staff is going to know you personally, and you will probably run into someone you know. We just thought the name Ten Friends captured that.”
Keeping with that familiarity, Cathleen wanted the style house to feel warm and welcoming. “Like a high-end coastal home, and a place you want to go to every week – like visiting a friend’s home.”
The stylists at Ten Friends are highly trained professionals, who are in this job as a career, according to Frank Zito, Ten Friends Director of Operations and former Director of Admissions for Paul Mitchell Schools.
“We have been able to hire top talent. Right now when you get a color and cut, the style is more of an after-thought, but not here. Our focus is on the style and our stylists have been specifically chosen and trained based on that philosophy. I look for stylists who are enthusiastic, good people who want to be a part of a growing brand and who provide great customer service. We will always grow someone’s talent with our in-depth training program.”
Ten Friends currently has one other location in downtown Hinsdale and is scheduled to open six to eight more style houses, including locations in Glencoe and Glenview, which are opening soon.
Stylist Kelsey Pizur says she is attracted to Ten Friends because she believes in the brand. “There’s nothing better than feeling good about yourself and being able to help others feel the same.”
First-time Ten Friends client, Danielle Thome, found the Inspiration Gallery – filled with ideas for hair styling – to be particularly helpful. Danielle says she loves the convenience of Ten Friends’ online booking system. “I can see myself booking an appointment on a Friday after my workout so I am ready to go for the weekend. I can quickly make that appointment right on my phone.”
And if you’re out running errands with time to spare and want to give Ten Friends a try, they welcome walk-ins as well!
Cathleen says a sense of being a part of the community and giving back is a core mission of Ten Friends. “What’s really important to us is getting to know the women in our community, the women who will be our guests, and learning what is important to them.”
They created the space to be very event-friendly and they welcome groups for birthday parties, bridal showers, baby showers or just a girls’ night out!
With the holidays upon us, the team at Ten Friends is celebrating their newest location and hoping you’ll help them toast to a new season of style surrounded by friends in their inviting new space at Deer Park Town Center.
