Roslyn Road Elementary School staff & students were the guests of honor at Tuesday’s Barrington 220 Board of Education meeting after Roslyn brings home the National Blue Ribbon School Award for a second time since 2013. Three Roslyn teachers, Michelle Alvarez, Cindy Hesselbein and Gina Weis traveled to Washington, D.C. last week to officially receive the award with honors from the U.S. Department of Education.

Roslyn Road is one of only 25 schools across Illinois and 362 schools nationwide to be honored with U.S. Department of Education’s 2019 Blue Ribbon award. Roslyn also earned the National Blue Ribbon School designation in 2013.

Since 1982 the Department of Education has been awarding the Blue Ribbon designation to public and private elementary, middle, and high schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. Schools may be nominated for the award only once within a five-year period.

“I am very proud of the students, staff and parents of Roslyn Road in being recognized for a second time as a National Blue Ribbon School by the Department of Education,” says Principal Paul Kirk. “This award signifies the work of many stakeholders over multiple years. Earning the Blue Ribbon is a community effort, from the support of district personnel, to the partnership of every Roslyn household and the efforts of every student and teacher. It is a terrific honor.”

“We are very proud of the academic accomplishment of Roslyn Road Elementary School to win the US Department of Education Blue Ribbon Award for the second time in five years,” said Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Brian Harris. “The students benefit from the outstanding staff and supportive parents, which results in excellence that occurs each day in our classrooms.”=

Barrington 220 schools have now earned a total of 11 National Blue Ribbon awards. Those schools include:

  • Grove Avenue Elementary: 1992, 2007, 2016
  • Hough Street Elementary: 2015
  • Roslyn Road Elementary: 2013, 2019

Barrington’s Saint Anne Parish School also earned Blue Ribbon Awards in 2006 & 2016.

Established in 1958, Roslyn Road School is a school of 430 students, kindergarten through fifth grades, with an average class size of 22 students.

On Roslyn’s National Blue Ribbon School (NBRS) application it’s written that “NBRS recognition significantly alters the learning culture of a school in its self-perception as well as the perception of community stakeholders. As a result of NBRS recognition, teacher efficacy increases, raising confidence that teaching practices and methods have met with success. Teachers feel empowered to act in improving student learning.”
