NATURE & SHAMROCK HUNT DISCOVERIES | Day 2 “Fun at Home” Photo Contest Challenge

NATURE & SHAMROCK HUNT DISCOVERIES | Day 2 “Fun at Home” Photo Contest Challenge

It’s St. Patrick’s Day and the sun is shining! Who’s ready for Day 2 of our Fun at Home Photo Contest with Heinen’s Grocery prizes? We know how hard parents are working to get into the swing of Barrington 220’s Distance Learning Plan  so we cooked up this contest to offer your kids a little something extra to do. And how much do you love seeing the sun today?!?

The theme for today’s contest is NATURE DISCOVERIES and this contest is now open to St. Paddy’s Day decorations spotted by anyone participating in Shamrock Hunts around town today! It’s a fun activity created by parents to support social distancing while getting our kids out and about. Here are some already spotted in the Village of Barrington…

Here’s the challenge…

Get outside, explore nature and take a  photo of some of your favorite discoveries. Is it a beautiful sunset? A sign of spring? A tiny creature? A blade of grass in the right light or a shamrock in a window ☘️?

Photos of shamrocks you create or spot around town today qualify for our “Nature Discoveries” contest theme so snap a photo and enter your photo for a chance to win. Here’s the idea behind the neighborhood shamrock hunts…

We have another $100 Heinen’s gift card to give to our winner or winners from today’s contest and we’ll announce winners as we kick off Wednesday’s contest tomorrow morning.

Once again, here are our daily contest themes…

Here are the daily contest themes:

  1. Monday: FOODIE FACES (This contest has ended. CLICK HERE for winners.)
Your mission is to get some fruits, veggies, anything edible … and turn it into a face using whatever you can find around the house. Be creative. Have fun and enter your photo for a chance to win Monday’s prize.
  2. Tuesday: NATURE DISCOVERIES
The forecast for Tuesday calls for sun with a high of 46 degrees so get outside, explore nature and take a  photo of some of your favorite discoveries. Is it a beautiful sunset? A sign of spring? A tiny creature? Or maybe just a blade of grass in the right light. Tune in to the natural world around us and enter your photo for a chance to win.
  3. Wednesday: MAKE SOMETHING COOL – CRAFTS, TOWERS & SUPER FORTS
We see raindrops in the forecast for Wednesday so we thought this would be a good day to create something cool! Paint a picture, make a craft, cook a recipe, build a fort or tower. Pull out the craft kit, puzzles, paints and paper that have been sitting in the closet. Grab all the sheets, blankets, boxes and pillows you can find lying around the house and build a giant fort! Have things like blocks, legos, lincoln logs and magna-tiles lying around the house? Build a tower that defies gravity or just looks really cool. Snap a photo and enter again for a chance to win. Did we mention that all are welcome to enter every day?
  4. Thursday: SCIENCE FUN
Since we’re all going to be learning from home next week, we’d like to let YOU be the teacher. Find a (parent approved) science experiment you can do with items you already have at home. Complete the experiment and share a photo plus a caption that sums up what you learned. Enter your photo for a chance to win. We can’t wait to learn from YOUR mad science skills!
  5. Friday: PEOPLE & PETS
Think back to all of the favorite things you found to do at home this week and all of the photos you’ve captured. Is there someone who you loved spending a little extra time with? Did your mom, dad, brother, sister or pet make you smile this week? Snap a photo of that person, people or pet and send it it for a chance to win. If they don’t want their picture taken? Feel free to make them a mask or costume from things you have around the house and take their picture in disguise. Raid the dress-up chest, pull out pieces from past Halloween costumes. Have fun because anything goes and thanks for sharing!

Entering the contest is easy. Simply Upload your photo and caption via our contest entry form and we’ll ask guest judges to help us choose the daily winner (or we may decide to pick our winner at random). We’ll share the photos, announce the winner plus reveal our new theme at the start of the next day. Here’s the contest entry form:

Hi! 😁 Today's Word of the Day is 汉语 hàn yǔ -- literally "Han Language."

So, we're backtracking... or maybe just following the path of yesterday's post 😂. Either way, it might behoove you to know the context of this word.

The 汉 hàn in 汉语 refers to the Han ethnic group -- the largest of the 56 (government-proclaimed) Chinese ethnic groups. Some data have indicated that Han people comprise 90% or more of the population. So, it's unsurprising that this large group has gotten to name one of the most common terms for Mandarin. (Remember, Mandarin is what we learn at BHS and is the official language of China. There are other dialects/languages in existence.)

Anyhoo, the point is that if one is going to be referring to Mandarn Chinese as a language, it wouldn't hurt to know how to say it two ways! 🙃

普通话 and 汉语 can be used in most of the same contexts -- 汉语 might be a little less eloquent, but you won't get in trouble for using either. 🙂
