121. “Great Dads of Barrington” Father’s Day Contest Winners Revealed
One of the most rewarding things about publishing 365Barrington.com is the opportunity to get to know more about you. We try hard to just be ourselves here and we so appreciate when you let us in on a little about your lives. It has been an honor to read more about some “Great Dads” in Barrington who were nominated by people who love them in our Father’s Day Photo Contest this year.
At dinner tonight, I put the name of each dad nominated in our contest into a bowl and had my husband draw the first winner. The person who nominated our first place dad will receive a really cool prize, thanks to L.L. Bean at the Arboretum of South Barrington. It’s the choice of a $50 gift card to spend at the store or a kayaking session for four people on the Fox River, part of L.L. Bean’s Outdoor Discovery School. When my husband drew the name of our first winner, I felt so hopeful that maybe this gift will help this family, just a tiny bit, through a really tough time. (We’re thinking of Landen and his mommy tonight.) Our first prize from L.L. Bean goes to…
Landen Ried & his Dad, William
Nominated by his son, Landen Ried
What Makes Your Dad Great?
“My daddy William Ried lost his life on May 2 this year. He was an amazing father that would do absolutely anything for me. We enjoyed working on his Mustang, going to Lake Arrowhead, and going fishing. I am going to be turning 4 this year. My daddy was going to be 27 three weeks after he died. This is going to be a really hard Fathers Day for me this year and my mommy is trying to figure out how to make it a little less horrible for me. RIP: William Ried 5/25/86-5/2/13”
(Note to Landen’s mommy – Your little rock star is so lucky to have you! We can tell his daddy will always be cherished on Father’s Day and every day of the year.)
My 4-year-old daughter, Grace, drew the name of our second winner tonight and this one is very appropriate! Because this “Great Dad” has five children and seven granddaughters and I’d say, for a big family like that, a $50 gift certificate to Barrington’s new Meatheads Burgers will come in quite handy! The new Meatheads restaurant is opening in Barrington this July right next door to Heinen’s Fine Foods at the Shops at Flint Creek. And the second winner is……

120. Barrington EATS: Celebrate Dads with Ribs 2 Ways
At my church, Willow Creek this past Sunday, our pastor Bill Hybels was discussing the importance of celebrating Dads on Father’s Day. He claimed that being a Dad takes tremendous dedication and that, for years, the lack of attendance at church on Father’s Day weekend made him think we may not be appropriately celebrating the importance of this role. Willow Creek has changed Father’s Day to the most attended weekend of the year with an event called Dadfest.
This event includes a rib cooking contest, a car and chopper expo, and a performance by comedian Michael Jr. All are welcome and you can CLICK HERE to see Michael Jr.’s video invitation to Dadfest.
I included two recipes below for making delicious ribs at home, and you can also order ribs to go from Heinen’s or Ciao Baby, or dine-in on ribs at Pinstripes barbecue buffet, Coopers Pizza’s Iron Horse BBQ or Kelsey Road House.
As I was getting rib-crazy in this post, I began to wonder if ribs were really what it’s all about to the Dads out there or if that has become a cliché for Father’s Day. I decided to ask 365Barrington’s resident Dad-Around-Town and father of two, Carlos Randolph. Carlos says he finds “…that being there for the family is the most important thing on Father’s Day. Just make the day about spending time with the family. A card from the kids and a happy Father’s Day kiss is good enough. While I do like to eat out and love Barrington Bistro, I’m quite content having normal family meals, and cooking steak, fish or just soup myself.”
Whether you decided to go all-out rib crazy this Father’s Day, or just enjoy a simple meal at home, I think the most important thing is to remember Carlos Randolph’s tip and just be there for each other in your family. Thank you Carlos, and Happy Father’s Day to all you Barrington Dads!
Ribs Two Ways; Sauce or Rub
There are two very popular ways to eat ribs. One is with barbeque sauce, the other with a barbeque rub. Following are two easy and delicious recipes to enjoy ribs either way……

175. Honor Dads to Help Other Fathers with TeamDad.com
A new initiative born right here in Barrington is gaining momentum in the movement to help dads be more present in the lives of their children. The recently debuted TeamDad.com is the latest online initiative created by David and Peggy Hirsch of Barrington Hills. David is also the founder of the Illinois Fatherhood Initiative, a campaign to help men be better fathers. David says his passion for this cause became “crystal clear” when his fifth child was born 15 years ago.
“As the father of five kids, the responsibility of being a dad when my career was taking off was overwhelming. There was the risk, I think, that I might not be focused on having a meaningful relationship with my kids and I wanted to do something about that. It was at that point, at the end of 1996, that I was looking for fatherhood resources online and couldn’t find any. I was also alarmed by the statistics I found. Four out of ten kids are born of a father absent at home. One out of three don’t have a dad’s name listed on their birth certificate.”…
