Every year I see the street-side signs calling all to come out to the Barrington Community Kite Fly. I haven’t been able to make it yet, but this year I am going! It’s happening tomorrow afternoon from 1 to 4PM and I can’t wait to see the colors of the rainbow flying over Citizens Park.
I can’t remember the last time I flew a kite. I can’t remember what my first kite looked like. But the image that does come to mind is my dad wrestling with the kite spool as we kids watched, waiting for liftoff. It was back before his curly hair turned white, when he wore those geeky glasses and JAMS. (sorry dad) The idea of kites flying will always make me happy because of this memory.
Now that I have two babies of my own, it’s time to show them what a kite is. So we’re packing up the double stroller and heading over to the park tomorrow to see what the Community Kite Fly looks like. It’s the 9th Annual Kite Fly in Barrington, sponsored by the Barrington Park District and The Barrington Breakfast Rotary Club. Rotary International is a global network of community volunteers dedicated to raising funds for important projects and needs in their communities. There will be a raffle to support Rotary-sponsored charities and the prizes are pretty sweet! You could win a 32′ HD flat screen TV, a golf package for two to play at Geneva National Golf Course or a Garmin GPS navigation system.
The coolest part is that the admission and the kites are free for tomorrow’s community fly. Just come on over to Citizens Park from 1 to 4 in the afternoon. The park is at 511 Lake Zurich Road, your first right off of Route 14, just past the Barrington Area Library. If there’s rain, the Kite Fly will happen on Sunday, May 2nd instead. Same place, same time. My fingers are crossed for warm breezes and sunshine.
