Did you know you can learn the techniques to break a board, Karate-style, in just fifteen minutes? That’s what the owner of Tiger Martial Arts in Barrington plans to demonstrate at his studio this weekend. Master David Garrison says it looks impressive, but it’s not hard. And he says the techniques he teaches could help save your life, “If you can break a board, you can take a guy out pretty easy if you hit him in the right spot.”
Master Garrison has been studying martial arts since 1975 and has been teaching the skills in Barrington for the past 25 years. He’s a 6th Degree Master Level Black Belt in Kyu Ki Do.
He specializes in teaching students of all ages a blend of Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu, Karate, Hapki Do and Judo / Jiu Jitsu and also has classes which focus on techniques for self defense. Master Garrison stresses the importance of learning self defense at all ages and says his programs go beyond the physical and teach moral based philosophies as well.
“We teach students to be courteous and to be respectful at all times. We teach them to be humble and not show off. We teach them about perseverance and to have integrity with everything they do.” He also shows students how to protect themselves in a way that’s fun and looks cool, too.
Master Lawson says he also emphasizes healthy lifestyle choices in his classes. His third degree black belt instructor, Holly Zastrow, is a certified nutritionist. You can see them both in action in this video.
The “Board Breaking” and “Karate Kid Class” open house will take place at Tiger Martial Arts this Saturday, October 2nd, from 2 until 4PM. The studio is located at 28686 W. Northwest Highway in Barrington. You can learn more about the school by visiting their website at TigerUMat.com.
