Tickets are still available, but they’re selling fast for next week’s Power of the Purse luncheon and purse auction at The Onion Pub & Brewery.  Come for lunch with friends and choose from a gorgeous selection of designer and custom handbags for a great cause.  It’s the Barrington Area United Way’s second annual luncheon benefiting area at-risk women and children and, if you want to go, I’d go straight to the tickets purchase page on the Barrington Area United Way’s website to get yours while you still can.

Post - Power of the Purse Invite

Last year, more than 130 community women joined together as founding members to create this women’s initiative and generate more than $20,000.

To become a 2013 member, women contribute a gift of $100 to the cause.  This year’s grant recipient, an agency that benefits at-risk women and children, will be announced at the luncheon.

The luncheon will also feature live and silent auctions of designer and custom handbags.  As women shop for their favorite accessories, they directly pool their resources to assist the needs of other community women.  In doing so, they harness their “purses,” the symbols of their own purchasing power, for the greater good.

Barrington Area United Way Executive Director, Leslie Luther-Jeschke says,  “This initiative reflects the reality that women in our community have a strong impact on economic and quality-of-life issues.”

The luncheon lasts from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 7th at The Onion Pub, 22221 North Pepper Road in Lake Barrington.  Tickets to attend the luncheon cost $50.  There are a limited number of tickets left so, to purchase yours, call 847-3382-8778 or visit the Barrington Area United Way’s website at bauw.org.

“Perhaps the most hurtful impact of the stigma surrounding mental illness is the common belief that women with mental illness cannot be good mothers. In a society that values ‘self-sacrificing mothers’ and rewards adherence to gender norms, we often deem that a ‘good mother’ has few needs and challenges of her own; rather, she can commit herself in her entirety to her children.

Mental illness can certainly make some aspects of motherhood more challenging, but it doesn’t disqualify those of us living with a mental health condition from being good parents. In fact, research suggests that many issues faced by mothers with mental illness are generic to all parents. While mothers with mental illness may experience more unique challenges from their symptoms, or from medication and treatment obligations, these risks can be managed with the guidance of a good collaborative care team.”
