It’s a big day for the mother/daughter pair and life-long Barrington residents who own the Little Shop of Papers at the Foundry of Barrington. Jean Stahr and her daughter Amy Hawking are celebrating their Barrington paper and gift shop’s 25 year anniversary today!
To mark their 25th anniversary, Jean and Amy are offering 25% off all items in the shop all day today. (except for custom orders) They opened at 10 a.m. and are inviting us to join them for a little party and special shopping event today when they’ll be serving wine and appetizers from 3 to 7 p.m.
I stopped by the store yesterday to ask Amy and Jean about this special anniversary. Jean told me, when she first opened the shop at the Ice House Mall 25 years ago, she thought she’d only stay in business for a couple of years. “And look what’s happened! I do this because I love it. I really do.”
Jean says they are particularly thankful for the longstanding relationships they have developed with clients and with vendors. “When we were in the Ice House Mall I did a custom birth announcement and the woman still shops with us. She recently came in and said ‘You did my son’s birth announcement and now we need your help with his wedding invitations.’ Now how about that!”
Amy says, in addition to the fine custom stationery Little Shop of Papers is known for, they’ve recently introduced some new gift lines to the store including Michal Aram, Kate Spade and Michel Design Works.
“We’re still at the forefront of etiquette because we would always rather see someone send a paper invitation or a paper thank you note than sending those over the internet. But because people are doing that we have also segued into offering more items for gift giving which is also a gracious part life.”
