The snow may have stopped falling but the hard work continues for snow removal crews throughout the Barrington area.  They’ve worked non-stop to clear our sidewalks and streets of snow in the Village of Barrington.  Today, they’re braving subzero temperatures to haul huge heaps of snow from the business district, street corners and parking lots.

Phillips Men’s Wear owner Peter Yankala took photos of the men at work today and writes, “Thank you to the Village crews who were working when I left the store Saturday night about 5:30, and when I arrived at 6:45 this morning.”

Over two dozen full and part-time public works employees have been plowing, round-the-clock, to clear our streets and sidewalks. Today, they’re actually working outside their vehicles, hand-digging to clear fire hydrants.  They’re also working hard to haul the snow to designated areas in Ron Beese Park and in the parking lot at the former Barn of Barrington restaurant.

Village Manager Jeff Lawler says crews have been working in 12-hour shifts and had to sacrifice time with their families over the holidays.

“The crews did an excellent job. These were long-duration events so they were out day and night trying to keep up with the rate of snowfall which was difficult during certain time periods with high winds causing drifting snow so it was a continuous operation to make the roads safe. Unfortunately for the crews, they had to plow through Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day so I give credit to all the crew members for showing up and doing their job as they always do.”

Jeff also says there are a couple of ways we can help them out. First, by clearing snow from the fire hydrants around our homes so they’re easy to find and access in the event of a fire emergency.  Also, he requests that people not push the snow from the end of their driveways into the street after shoveling.  “If people push their snow from driveways into the street, with this weather that makes Village streets difficult and unsafe for other drivers.
