There are so many reasons to come out to ChristKindlFest which opens next week and runs December 4-7th in Barrington, but we’re narrowing it down to twelve in our 12 Days of ChristKindlFest Countdown. For reason number two, we’re putting the focus on the Merry Meals Project which you’ll find underway during ChristKindlFest.

Just like last year, students with Barrington High School’s Interact Club along with volunteers they enlist will be gathering in a tent at the fest that’s fully equipped with all of the supplies needed to package meals for families in Guatemala. Interact is Rotary International’s service club for young people ages 12 to 18.

Their plan is to pack 10,000 meals which will be sent to families living in the communities surrounding Guatemala City’s garbage dump.  Did you know there are over 13,000 people living in those garbage dump communities? Over half of them are children.  The families have the daily struggle of scavenging through tons of trash to find food and materials to sell or build their homes.

Merry Meals is made possible in partnership with Kids Around the World, for the food packing part, and Potter’s House Association, an organization that works in the Guatemala garbage dump communities.  If they reach their goal of packing 10,000 meals at ChristKindlFest, that’s enough food to provide 27 children with one nutritious and flavorful meal each day for a year!
