The featured project, a Georgian Colonial family home in Lake Forest, brings to life the Kate Marker aesthetic of creating a timeless, original look by mixing old and new. The fourteen page spread showcases the freshly remodeled and redesigned residential space that delivers an open layout for a young family seeking function and comfort.

In the magazine, Kate Marker shares her approach of blending transitional furnishings and modern touches to achieve the client’s vision of overhauling the house built in the 1960s. Creamy herringbone wingback chairs punctuated with playful pillows, a bar cart in an antique brass finish, and a jute wool stair runner are just a few examples of the design details documented in the article that combine the home’s architectural heritage while embracing trends of today.

Kate worked to make each room feel inviting and unique with well-thought out touches for each space. The antique mirrored backsplash in the butler’s pantry and glossy paint in the office reflect light, while a bold white with black wall covering opens up the modest dining room. The transforming power of the Kelly Wearstler window treatments, however, may be Marker’s favorite detail, successfully improving the perception of the living room ceiling height. “Eight foot ceilings are always a challenge. The subtle geometric print draws the eye up, making the ceiling appear higher than it is,” Kate shares.

“Entertaining a crowd was also a high priority for my client and we collaborated in each room to accommodate this.”  Kate says she placed furniture for easy traffic flow, selected fabrics for stain resistance, and chose eye-pleasing storage to keep clutter curtailed. “It is always so gratifying when the client truly believes every space is now functional and inviting.”
