Welcome to This Day in Barrington History
Good morning and welcome to March 14 and Day 73 of 365 in Barrington, Illinois! You’ll find our stories of the day – past, present & future (events) – right here on today’s DailyPage. Because every day has its own rhythm, we’re sharing a song of the day here at 365Barrington.com.
On this day in 1998, “Getting Jiggy Wit It” started a three week
Our song for today is American actor and rapper, Will Smith’s “Getting Jiggy Wit It“. The song spent three weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart from March 14, 1998. It also won a Grammy Award in 1999 for the Best Rap Solo Performance.
The song samples the 1979 Sister Sledge song “He’s the Greatest Dancer“. The “mama-uh, mama-uh, mama come closer” line is a reference to the song “Soul Makossa” by Manu Dibango, specifically the version adapted by Michael Jackson in “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’“‘s final bridge.
Song of the Day
The connotations associated with the expression getting jiggy are open to interpretation. 😉 The term was originally a description of sexy fashion or style, but expanded to include dancing skill. Whatever the genre, with St. Patrick’s Day coming up this week, it’s a good time to be getting jiggy!
