Because I’ve have had two babies in the past three years, I’ve become a bit of a stranger to sushi. You’re not supposed to eat sushi when you’re expecting and it was tough to forgo one of my favorite types of food.  So I was really excited to check out Naomi Sushi Express in Barrington. It’s the little carry-out sushi place right by the Barrington Jewel. I popped in there, right before the dinner-time rush, feeling confident and eager to learn about a new place in town. I introduced myself to head sushi chef, Bobu San, and explained that I wanted to feature Naomi Sushi on this blog.  He was extremely gracious, but I’m not sure he really warmed up to me. He seemed very serious about his sushi and I’m still trying to figure out the thought bubble that belongs in this photo that I took.

Naomi Sushi Express in Barrington, IllinoisBobu San told me that their little sushi place has been quite the hot spot since it opened in July of 2009. Though there are a few tables for diners, he says most of their business is carry-out. He says some of their most popular menu items are the “Crunchy, Spicy Tuna,” a five piece roll for only $3.00 and the “Godzilla Roll” with shrimp tempura, cream cheese, crab, avocado and three sauces. He even prepared one for me to sample. It was light and crunchy and super tasty for $10 dollars! No wasabi or soy sauce necessary.

While I was there, three customers came in and ordered the seasoned crab stuffed mushrooms. One of them told me she loves these mushrooms so much, for a special treat she makes a special trip to Barrington, all the way from Gurnee! I haven’t tried them yet, but they’re next on my list.

I also found a couple of glowing reviews online.  Listen to what some of their customers are saying:

“If you are hungry in Barrington, Naomi is where you need to be! This place is truly a hidden gem in Barrington. It’s small and cozy, the service is very good, the prices are reasonable, and the food is fantastic.”

“Naomi Sushi Express is like an oasis in the desert.  Not only do they have great sushi, they also have a sampling of Korean dishes, like my favorite Bi Bim Bop.  The sushi is very fresh, the cooked food is always fresh, hot and flavorful.  Prices are very reasonable, too.  There are just a few tables; it’s great for take-out.  The staff is always smiling and friendly.”

That’s pretty great feedback for a serious guy that I’ll be visiting again very soon.

Naomi Sushi Express is at 126 W. Main Street in Barrington.  They’re open from 11AM until 8PM Monday through Friday, 4PM until 8PM on Saturday and closed Sundays. You can reach them at 847-381-2234.
