We’re on day 75 here at 365Barrington.com and I think it’s about time we start talking about Barrington’s golf community. There are six golf courses in Barrington, but only one of them is a public course and that’s Makray Memorial Golf Club.
Makray is a premier 18-hole championship caliber course with 7,000 yards, four sets of tees and a par of 71. It’s known for its water, strategic bunkers, bent grass tees, fairways and greens, blue grass roughs and scenic views. The PGA head golf pro at Makray, Don Habjan, says the slope to the greens at Makray makes the course uniquely challenging. He says they moved 2-million cubic yards of dirt and brought in over 100,000 truckloads of soil when they rebuilt the old Thunderbird golf course to create the new Makray course which opened in June of 2004.
Habjan says the course was strategically built so that, with each hole, you feel like you’re on a hole by yourself. The cost to play 9-holes at Makray starts at $27 on weekdays and $32 on weekends and holidays. Playing 18-holes starts at $49 on weekdays and $74 on weekends and holidays. You’ll find more information about prices and tee times by clicking HERE.
Habjan and assistant golf pro, Brad Ray are both available for private lessons which start at $40 per half hour. Private lessons are by appointment only. The lessons are tailored for golfers of all ages and abilities. You can call the golf shop at (847) 381-6500 or learn more about their Junior Golf programs by clicking HERE.
The 24,000 square foot club house at Makray is a destination on it’s own with beautiful views of the course. With banquet facilities for up to 240 people, it’s a great place to schedule a wedding, party or corporate event and it’s a treat to find a seat at the Oak Terrace Grill, a dining room with a full bar overlooking the course. Makray Memorial Golf Club is at 1010 S. Northwest Highway and is open seven days a week.
