Want to get outside and explore nature with your kids tomorrow? There’s a full schedule of exciting activities planned for all ages during Family Nature Fest from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 21st at Citizens Park in Barrington.
There will be an interactive fitness trail set up for tomorrow’s festival, along with exciting fitness-themed games, activities and classes. Everything is designed to encourage kids and their families to turn off the TV and instead get outside with nature, have fun and get fit.
Plus, you’ll learn some easy, fun and practical ways to improve food choices for the whole family.
The Family Nature Fest is planned to celebrate June as Leave No Child Inside month. The Leave No Child Inside initiative was created in 2007 by an alliance of Chicagoland organizations as a way to promote activities that get kids out from behind the computer and other electronics and increase the amount of quality time they spend outside. Here’s an excerpt from their website about the initiative and it’s mission.
“Kids today build internet sites instead of constructing forts in the woods. Music piped into earphones has replaced listening for the sounds of bird calls and frog croaks. Cell phones and emails are more efficient than two cups on a string or flashlight signals. Childhood has changed….Research has demonstrated that outdoor play helps children manage stress and become resilient. Natural spaces stimulate children’s limitless imaginations and foster creativity. Children who connect with nature may be more inventive and better problem-solvers due to the hands-on learning that the outdoors provide…It’s time for kids to take a break from the TV and the computer and go back outside!”
Groups like Citizens for Conservation, the Barrington Park District, Lake County Forest Preserves and Barrington-area local governments are all behind the initiative and are hoping for a great turnout tomorrow.
