362. Step Outside for the Winter Wonders Scavenger Hike

Home Newsroom 362. Step Outside for the Winter Wonders Scavenger Hike

There’s something uplifting about how brightly the sun shines on clear days in January. The air is cold and crisp, but longer days begin their return and December’s gray skies start to fade as we hunker down and wait for spring. To breathe in some of this January air while working up some new energy for the new year, check out the Winter Wonders Scavenger Hike coming up on Sunday, January 20th.

It’s a naturalist-guided tour happening from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 20th, at the Crabtree Nature Center, which you’ll find at 3 Stover Road in Barrington Hills.  We’re invited to join the group on a winter walk through the woods to look for animal tracks, listen for birds and soak up the more peaceful sights and sounds of the post-holiday season.

For more information about the hike, call 847-381-6592.  To learn more about the beautiful surroundings at Crabtree Nature Center, visit fpdcc.com, the website for the Forest Preserve District of Cook County.  And here’s a look at the Crabtree Nature Center map to get the lay of the land for your next winter hike.

“Perhaps the most hurtful impact of the stigma surrounding mental illness is the common belief that women with mental illness cannot be good mothers. In a society that values ‘self-sacrificing mothers’ and rewards adherence to gender norms, we often deem that a ‘good mother’ has few needs and challenges of her own; rather, she can commit herself in her entirety to her children.

Mental illness can certainly make some aspects of motherhood more challenging, but it doesn’t disqualify those of us living with a mental health condition from being good parents. In fact, research suggests that many issues faced by mothers with mental illness are generic to all parents. While mothers with mental illness may experience more unique challenges from their symptoms, or from medication and treatment obligations, these risks can be managed with the guidance of a good collaborative care team.”
