Swimming, food and games will also be available for everyone. The event benefits JourneyCare for Children, the pediatric hospice and palliative care program for kids facing serious illness. In 2012, JourneyCare covered almost $338,000 for care services provided to children because of the community’s generosity.

20th Annual Duck Race & Pool Party:
Come for free swimming, children’s activities, DJ and family fun! Adopt your ducks and watch them race down the slide to win great prizes. All to support the pediatric programs of JourneyCare.

What’s a Duck Race?
At the Duck Races, hundreds of colorful little plastic ducks careen down big water slides at local pools to the waiting arms of race officials who pluck the winning quackers out of the water.

Post - 20th Annual Duck Race and Pool PartyParticipants have a chance to win prizes by “adopting” (purchasing) ducks with the hope that they win in any of the several races.

The ducks are numbered and winners announced after the races.

Admission to the pool party is free!

Activities for children and families will be available in addition to the Duck Races.

What is JourneyCare for Children?
JourneyCare for Children is the largest pediatric hospice and palliative care program in Illinois.  JourneyCare’s pediatric program exists to help children with chronic and life-limiting illnesses and their families live each day to the fullest with comfort, courage, optimism, and always hope. From the time of diagnosis and throughout a family’s journey, they strive to provide the ultimate quality of life, respect and dignity, while honoring the uniqueness of each child and family. The Duck Races are the only fundraiser during the year that specifically funds the pediatric programs. With this additional funding, JourneyCare is able to provide this exceptional and unique care and never have to turn a child away due to inability to pay.

“Perhaps the most hurtful impact of the stigma surrounding mental illness is the common belief that women with mental illness cannot be good mothers. In a society that values ‘self-sacrificing mothers’ and rewards adherence to gender norms, we often deem that a ‘good mother’ has few needs and challenges of her own; rather, she can commit herself in her entirety to her children.

Mental illness can certainly make some aspects of motherhood more challenging, but it doesn’t disqualify those of us living with a mental health condition from being good parents. In fact, research suggests that many issues faced by mothers with mental illness are generic to all parents. While mothers with mental illness may experience more unique challenges from their symptoms, or from medication and treatment obligations, these risks can be managed with the guidance of a good collaborative care team.”
