One of my favorite things about producing Barrington Street Style is meeting people who are thoughtful about choosing clothes that reflect their personalities. Jonathan Matta is one of those people. When I asked Jonathan what inspires his look, he was quick to tell me that he likes to keep it simple with pieces inspired by classic, iconic, American menswear.
When it comes to his sense of style, Jonathan believes that you don’t need a whole lot. “Its so simple. A good pair of denim jeans with a cuff, a couple of oxfords or tees or henleys and a good pair of brown boots is all you need.” Jonathan explained that it’s all about staple pieces. When I think of classic, iconic menswear I think of Steve McQueen, James Dean and JFK, all of these men emulated what Jonathan talks about. Their style was simple and classic, never overdone or flashy. This classic and iconic look will forever be in style and our eye will always be drawn to it.
In this look, Jonathan is layering two shirts from Mizzen+Main, an American shirt manufacturer that has pushed the envelope on performance menswear. ‘Combining advanced performance fabrics with a refined, traditional style, Mizzen+Main has changed the way men approach this staple of their wardrobe with a shirt that is moisture wicking, wrinkle free, has four way stretch, and requires no ironing or dry cleaning.’ Jonathan is wearing the “Tolowa” Red Perfect Henley and the Blackman 2.0 White Dress Shirt. The lightweight material makes them perfect for layering. He is wearing a pair of raw salvage denim jeans from Gap and a pair of classic Clark’s Chukkah Boots. To polish his iconic look, he wears a Tissot watch.
Jonathan works as a designer for learning spaces at KI, helping to re-imagine what the student learning experience can be from kindergarten to higher education. His wife, Erin is a crossfit coach at Crossfit Barrington. They live in Barrington with their two kids, Ellison and Nolan and their pup, Duncan.
