272. Marketplace: Beer Business Booming at Onion Pub & Brewery
On the main level, the Onion Pub and Brewery in Lake Barrington has the feel of a traditional English Pub, with giant timbers dating back 250 years overhead in the bar and dining rooms and a burning fireplace warming guests enjoying beers brewed on-site.
But there are few clues to the scale of the brewing operation going on down below and the plans this 15-year-old, family-owned business has to expand its brewing business. So we recently took a tour with Brewmaster and owner, Mike Kainz, to find out what’s in the works.
Mike grew up in Tower Lakes and graduated from Barrington High School in 1983. He started brewing beer while serving in the Peace Corps in North Africa in his early twenties, where he worked to grow food to feed orphans in Morocco……

192. Cool Off with Ice Cold Beer at Barrington Brew Fest
If you love tasting specialty beers and finding new seasonal favorites, you don’t want to miss this weekend’s 9th Annual Barrington Brew Fest in downtown Barrington. It’s the finale to the community’s week-long 4th of July festivities and it’s happening from 3 to 7 p.m. this Saturday, July 7th, with over 40 brewers offering about 100 samplings. Can you think of a better way to beat the heat?
Brew Fest tickets cost $40 in advance and can be purchased online by clicking HERE or in person at McGonigal’s Pub (105 S. Cook Street), Wool Street Sports Bar (128 Wool Street) and The Onion Pub (22221 N. Pepper Road in Lake Barrington). You can also purchase tickets at the door for $45 and the ticket price is worth every penny……
