144. The Gentleman Farmer Returns to Barrington Roots

After five years of reverse commuting from the city to their Barrington Hills farm, The Gentleman Farmer, organic farmers Dominic and Jessica Green are relocating their family to Barrington–and returning to Jessica’s roots. As they begin their fourth year growing for their Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) members, they’re also expanding their offerings and looking forward to selling their delicious, locally-grown produce at the Barrington Farmer’s Market.
Dominic and Jessica didn’t always plan on becoming farmers, nor did they envision a move to Barrington. It’s home for Jessica, a Barrington High School graduate, but Dominic hails from the South of England–and both are dyed-in-the-wool world travelers. They each had careers in the arts – Dominic as an actor, and Jessica as a dancer and Pilates instructor – but were looking for a lifestyle change. As new parents to their son Henry, born in 2008, they craved a more direct connection to food and community.
They also had access to Jessica’s family’s land in Barrington Hills–beautiful, fertile land just 35 miles from the city. As Dominic and Jessica sought direction for their next move, farming began to emerge as a strong contender.
It was during that time that the couple fell hard for the lifestyle and ethics of the River Cottage, a self-sustaining farming community founded by British chef and journalist Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. Jessica began researching the Stateline Farm Beginnings program through Angelic Organics, and the couple decided to apply.
Dominic says that the program provided them with invaluable training, but nothing compares to the farming experience itself. The Gentleman Farmer was certainly born in the Stateline Beginnings program, but has grown only through seasons of work in the field. “I’m like a toddler learning to walk, gaining stability each year,” he says. In his first year, he farmed a third of an acre, and grew vegetables for fifteen families and friends (Dominic and Jessica affectionately refer to that as year zero).
As their farm grew, so did their CSA membership and their following at the Logan Square Farmer’s Market, where loyal customers sought them out each week. Dominic increased his yields, and Jessica managed CSA subscriptions, maintained the website, and crafted newsletters each week.
Now in his fourth official year, Dominic is farming seven acres, two and a half of which will rest each year, planted with cover crops. The Gentleman Farmer is offering 100 twenty-week CSA shares this year (click here to sign up). “I’m planting 130 varieties of about 45 different vegetables,” Dominic says. This diversity is a key component of sustainable farming practices, and also ensures gorgeously varied boxes for CSA members.
Full Share CSA members receive a box each week; Half Share members receive a box every other week. The boxes – which members can either pick up at the farm or at Norton’s USA – each contain about 7-10 fresh, organic, seasonal vegetables. Members also receive a weekly CSA newsletter including notes from the farmer, recipes, nutritional information, photo and video updates on the crops and weekly harvest, and usually a fun farm anecdote.
Dominic and Jessica are also offering a new membership option this year called Worker Shares. In exchange for one shift of work at the farm each week of the season, Worker Share members will receive 1 full Vegetable CSA Share (worth $595). This is a formal commitment to work on the farm for one morning or one afternoon per week (4 – 5 hours). The work will include everything from seeding, planting, weeding, harvesting, washing and packing etc. It’ll be hard work, but the rewards will be delicious–and made that much sweeter by your labor.
Barrington resident Cory Flahaven tried two CSA programs before finding The Gentleman Farmer. “We really think that three times is the charm,” she says. “This is true Barrington local, and the communication Jessica provides is unsurpassed. Her recipes range from simple (which is sometimes perfect) to more sophisticated, and they’re always good.”
Cory and her husband have a four-year-old daughter, Kendall, who adores her weekly trips to the farm……

95. Synergy HomeCare of Barrington Celebrates Six Years of Service

For six years, Synergy HomeCare has provided home-based, non-medical services to the Barrington area and beyond. Owner Diego Uribe and his dedicated team work around the clock to ensure that Synergy’s team of highly trained caregivers delivers the very best care to their clients. As they celebrate their sixth anniversary this month, they’re taking time to look back on what they’ve learned, and ahead to a growing future.
When Diego Uribe’s mother, Gladys Uribe, began her battle with cancer, Diego knew he would do whatever he could to ease her suffering and maintain her quality of life. “She had gone to the gym twice a day for as long as I could remember–she was a very healthy woman,” Diego recalls. “So to see her in pain, and to watch her health decline…it was a very difficult thing.”
Diego, a longtime Barrington resident, had to piece together resources in the Houston, Texas, area to provide the care his mother needed. Though there were many services available for medical and non-medical care, they were impersonal and required extensive coordination from a distance.
“I was upset by the lack of personal attention my mother received. She deserved better than that.”
It was a few years after his mother’s passing that Diego decided to leave his corporate job to pursue a career in home care services.
As Diego researched the home care industry, he was drawn to Synergy HomeCare’s business structure. “It provided some helpful tools for us as we were just starting out,” he says. So in March of 2008, Diego started the first Synergy HomeCare franchise in Illinois……

38. Marketplace: Say “Oui” to Healthy Winter Skin with Votre Vu

Word-of-mouth buzz and a growing number of local fans are causing a new trend in skin care among women of all ages in Barrington.  Last fall, Fox Point mom, Amanda Hines, discovered Votre Vu.  It’s a 4-year-old American company offering a naturally-based, upscale collection of premiere cosmetics and skin care products handcrafted in France.  Their luxury line is more affordably priced than comparable products and Amanda Hines says the results speak for themselves.
Amanda is a Votre Vu Brand Ambassador, sharing the line with others interested in better skincare.  She hosts in-home Votre Vu parties or “soirées”, offering an opportunity for guests to sample and experience the products on their own skin.   “Our goal at Votre Vu is to change peoples’ lives for the better with professional-grade products that promote healthy skin and in turn, a renewed sense of confidence for our customers.”
Votre Vu offers products for both women and men and all of the company’s skin care is handcrafted in a private lab in France that caters to upscale European spas.
Amanda says Votre Vu’s skin care is  custom created for effective results using the highest grade of botanicals and highly sought-after marine agents.
After falling in love with the products herself and the results she noticed with her own skin, Amanda decided she had to share Votre Vu with others.  “I just really love the way the products work.  The line sells itself and the price is very reasonable.”  And Amanda says women in Barrington particularly love that they can couple the skin care options with Votre Vu’s handcrafted line of naturally based French Accents cosmetics.
Votre Vu’s French Accents face basics include a tinted moisturizer, tinted lip and cheek stain, soft eye liner, eyelid smoother, brow definer, mascara, bronzer, powder and brushes.  And the icing on the cake is that Votre Vu donates $1 from every French Accents product purchased to pediatric cancer treatment.
To put our best face forward during these last cold and drying days of winter, Amanda says our skin needs nourishment now more than ever.  So she let us in on the four simple steps she recommends for a systematic approach to a more healthy complexion……

283. Marketplace: Dr. Reinhold Llerena on the Power of Prevention

As we get close to wrapping up 2012, the new year is on the horizon and resolutions are already on our minds.  (Not to rush the season. We still have all of December to indulge!)  But in the coming weeks, we’ll be getting to know more about some of Barrington’s very own experts in health, fitness and fresh starts, starting this week with family physician and Alexian Brothers associate, Dr. Reinhold Llerena.

To learn a little more about Dr. Llerena, we paid him a visit in his office, which is located in a highly traveled spot in town.  It’s right by Barrington’s drive-thru Starbucks on Northwest Highway.

We asked Dr. Llerena for a few tips to a healthy new year and the conversation quickly turned to five health issues that he says can be prevented or more easily managed with early detection.  We’ll get to Dr. Llerena’s list of 5 Most Preventable Diseases in just a minute.
But first, we’re excited to introduce Dr. Llerena as the first medical professional to join the Barrington Online Markplace here at 365Barrington.com. In case you’re new to this website, here’s a quick look at how the Marketplace works…

Now back to our newest Marketplace member.  Dr. Llerena grew up in a household of teachers. Which is probably why, as a family practitioner, it is almost second nature for him to teach his patients how to best take care of themselves to prevent or minimize disease as they age.
“If you are exercising and eat a healthy diet, then keep it up,” said Dr. Llerena. “And see a family doctor every couple of years. After age 50, see your doctor every year because things crop up a lot quicker.”
Dr. Llerena says he takes it hard if a patient he sees regularly comes down with an illness.
“If someone has a heart attack, stroke, an ulcer, or something I know was preventable and I find out they get sick, I take it personally. So, my drive is to make sure people know why they should be having preventative tests, why they should be having certain vaccines.”

Diet and exercise are important to prevention, but Dr. Llerena says so are the appropriate medical tests and checkups.  Here’s what he says are the 5 Most Preventable Diseases More Treatable with Early Detection ……

272. Marketplace: Beer Business Booming at Onion Pub & Brewery

On the main level, the Onion Pub and Brewery in Lake Barrington has the feel of a traditional English Pub, with giant timbers dating back 250 years overhead in the bar and dining rooms and a burning fireplace warming guests enjoying beers brewed on-site.
But there are few clues to the scale of the brewing operation going on down below and the plans this 15-year-old, family-owned business has to expand its brewing business.  So we recently took a tour with Brewmaster and owner, Mike Kainz, to find out what’s in the works.
Mike grew up in Tower Lakes and graduated from Barrington High School in 1983.  He started brewing beer while serving in the Peace Corps in North Africa in his early twenties, where he worked to grow food to feed orphans in Morocco……

Starting this fall, Wool Street is now offering on tap six craft beers currently produced at The Wild Onion Brewery in Lake Barrington, and it gets even better…
They’re also hosting a regular “Craft Corner” beer event on the last Wednesday night of each month, featuring locally brewed beers and guest beer experts, like Onion Pub owners, brewers and distributors, Mike and John Kainz.
It’s a new partnership that’s all about encouraging us to “drink local” and enjoy locally sourced and locally sold craft beers. “This concept of offering a locally brewed craft beer night with food pairings and education is totally new and unique to Barrington.”……

Notice:  Accessories for Living opened in Barrington this past May.  The Barrington location is the third in this series of family-owned Notice boutiques run by by mom, Mari Barnes and her two daughters, Hannah and Becky.  They have two additional Notice locations in Evanston and Lake Geneva.
I caught up with Hannah and Becky to find out about the store’s latest inventory and they shared their favorite new items for fall.  Hannah, who manages the Barrington store,  told me one of the highlights at Notice is that they work hard to keep their inventory fresh.
“Everything is constantly changing with new scarves, new gloves, great fall pieces, winter items and spring merchandise which will be here before you know it.”
Becky says they’ve learned a lot about what Barrington shoppers want since opening this past spring and are introducing new products based on local customer feedback.
“The Barrington shopper loves feminine designs.  They like to be on-trend, with put-together looks that are very fashion-forward, but done in a sophisticated and ladylike way.”
So, without further delay, here’s the list of Notice’s “Top 10 Must Haves for Fall”, complete with explanations from Becky about why these items are great as gifts and made for any wardrobe.  (But hands off my perforated vegan leather dress ;))……
