I have a “love/not-too-fond-of” relationship with exercise.  I love the results, but I’m not too fond of what it takes to get there.  But a couple of years ago I discovered this quaint pilates studio called Yin Yang Pilates at 5073 Shoreline Road in Lake Barrington.  I stopped in to catch up with Laura Cappelletti, the owner of this wonderful little place of peace and discovered she’s been quite busy building a place to connect the mind and body since the opening of Yin Yang Pilates in May 2008.

Laura, a resident of Barrington since 1989, had a very filled schedule before opening her studio. She was a producer of Cable Networks “The Bottom Line”, a US National Aerobic Champion and a Cheerleading Coach for six years at St. Anne School in Barrington.  When not working in fitness, Laura worked with Preservation of Human Dignity as a presenter in local high schools speaking to teens about sexuality and relationships.  And just to keep her completely busy, she and her husband manages the busy lives of their four daughters.

Laura was teaching Cardio and Pilates Mat at a local YMCA when a friend asked her to move her talent to a larger fitness facility. She considered the opportunity, but after enjoying dinner at ZaZa’s Tavola Italiana in Lake Barrington, she decided the location captured the peacefulness she envisioned for her own studio.  After settling in, she likes the idea that you can park closely, walk right in, find peace and leave your stress behind.

Yin Yang Pilates, an environmentally green studio with cork floors and latex-free mats, goes beyond just a pilates studio to reach a full mind/body connection.  The fitness programs are designed to become part of your lifestyle embodying the studio’s philosophy of “what the mind thinks, the body responds.”  Yin Yang Pilates has experienced and certified trainers and offer individualized and group instruction for Cardio (Kick Boxing, Interval Training and Boot Camp Pilates), Yoga (Pre/Post Natal Yoga and Mommy Baby Yoga), and Pilates (Small Group Pilates Training – Reformer, Barrel and Chair, RBC).

Whether you’re getting ready for your wedding day or just need to stay fit, Yin Yang Pilates makes it easy to create an individualized program with 10-class packages for $130 and 20-class packages for $220.  You can mix different types of classes to build a program custom designed for you.  Individual training is offered at $65/hour.  As part of healing the mind, for every package sold, Ying Yang Pilates donates a Bed Net to families in Africa to protect them from Malaria, saving four lives.  Laura’s motivation for the Bed Net Program, “the mind is comforted to know there is social justice in taking care of people; healing minds saving lives.”

To connect the mind with the body, Blue Lotus Tempo Meditation is offered every month and is led by Bhante Sujatha.  A Buddhist monk of some twenty plus years, originally from Sri Lanka, Sujatha has taught happiness through meditation around the world. The Gong Bath™ Meditation, offered every other month, will soothe, inspire and awaken your spirit as Sacred Sound Practitioner Mark Placzkowski bathes you with sounds from a 36” Pluto and 38” Sun gong.

If you would like to experience Yin Yang Pilates, stop in at 5073 Shoreline Rd in Lake Barrington or call 847.381.4400, or you can check their class schedule on their website.  Your first class is free but stick around after class because tea is served after each class to encourage a sense of community.
