When it comes to martial arts, everything I know I learned from the “Karate Kid”. But if I ever encounter a bad guy, let’s face it, “wax on, wax off” just isn’t going to cut it and I know I can’t count on Mr. Miyagi either. That’s why I decided to stop and check things out over at Barrington Martial Arts. I phoned first and caught up with the man in charge, a guy named “Master Lawson”.

Barrington Martial Arts

Master Lawson has been studying martial arts for over 30 years, he’s a 6th degree Master instructor in Taekwondo, a 5th degree Black Belt in Karate and a 4th degree Black Belt in Pankratia. His is the only facility in Illinois with five Master instructors and he’s serious about teaching kids and adults how to defend themselves.

Karate Kid at Barrington Martial ArtsMaster Lawson simplified things for me and explained that Taekwondo is mostly kicking and leg techniques, while Karate is mostly hand techniques, like striking and punching. He teaches both along with other needed self defense skills in the anti-bullying, anti-child-abduction and women’s safety workshops he hosts at his martial arts school. There are self defense workshops scheduled for June 19th and 26th, and you can sign up for classes any time. Most cost about $10 to $15 per class, and he even offers family sessions, where you can learn to kick with your kids.

But Master Lawson teaches more than just the techniques. It struck me how courteous the students were when I visited. I heard many “yes sirs”, “excuse me’s” and plenty of “pleases”. From the start of the class to the farewell bow, there was a code of behavior present that was hard not to notice. Pretty impressive for these karate kids.
