Share Your Mom's Best Advice

Mother’s Day is just a few days away and I thought it would be fun to collect some favorite words of wisdom from moms right her in Barrington. Did your mom ever give you a piece of advice that has come back to help (or haunt) you? Did you pick up any of her favorite sayings that you now find yourself repeating to the kids in your life? My mom has shared many memorable words over the years.  Some make me cringe.  Many make me smile.  But there is one piece of advice that I’ll never forget.

When I was little, my mom liked to remind me of The Golden Rule, treat others as you’d like to be treated.  When I was a rebellious teenager, I heard her repeatedly say, “Be careful, or your face might freeze that way” and she often called me, “Lizzy Last Word”, a nickname that still surfaces from time to time.  But, if I had to pick just one piece of advice that has influenced me most, it would be the times when she told me this…

“Find a job that you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Now that’s a goal that almost sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? But my mom somehow led me to believe that it can happen. In fact, I’ve made many choices in my life using that advice. I spent ten years working as a TV news reporter, anchor, producer and writer. I barely made enough money to pay the bills at the beginning, but I loved every minute of it and learned many valuable lessons along the way. It’s funny that her advice led me to join her real estate business in 2004. When I think about what the future holds for my own children, I hope they too find work that fulfills them. It’s not easy, but it’s possible. At least that’s what my mom tells me ;).

What piece of your mom’s advice has made the biggest impression on you? Does she have any favorite sayings that you’ll never forget? If so, please share them below along with a favorite photo of your mom, if you’d like. We’ll publish a collective list of Barrington MOM-isms this Mother’s Day, right here at 365Barrington.com.
