We had a blast seeing every single photo submitted in Wednesday’s Fun at Home Photo Contest! The challenge was to MAKE SOMETHING COOL, including crafts, art, food, towers and super forts. Knowing we couldn’t choose winners on our own, I again reached out to a friend for help. Today’s guest judge is … Susan McConnell! She’s a Barrington mother-of-four, long time photographer and founder of Let It Be Us, inspiring foster care and adoption  in Illinois.

Early this morning I sent Susan all of our entries and she chose the winner plus a runner up for today’s contest. She wrote back to share her choice. And the winner is… Roman B., a 4th grade student at Grove Avenue Elementary School who built this cool fort for homework and alone time (NO GROWN UPS ALLOWED) while self isolating at home. Congratulations, Roman!

Here’s what Susan says about her choice.

“Out of over 20 photos this is #1. When I was raising my four children we got through some of the biggest snow storms and heat waves by building cabins inside and creating a change of scenery. A change of scenery can be very important when we’re stuck inside. Cabins can have a new meaning for christmas lights, flash lights, and now distance learning. A new space can inspire creativity and we look to the future of our children to use their creativity to innovate and make the world a better place. And, at the end of the day, memories have been made. Other ways to make cabins include: throwing a big blanket over a table, cleaning out a cupboard in the kitchen, and placing furniture in the middle of a room and topping with sheets.”

Watch this video for a closer look at Roman’s cool homework fort.

We asked Susan if she would choose a runner up and her choice is the Rudzinski family making chocolate covered strawberries at home in Hoffman Estates. “To me, this photo says empowerment, experimenting and encouragement. When we teach our children to cook we are teaching them to care for themselves and those around them. Food is a love language that speaks to all of us.”

Contest winners will receive a gift card from Heinen’s Grocery, which we will be sending by mail. All are welcome to enter today’s contest, SCIENCE FUN, where we let YOU be the teacher. Find a (parent approved) science experiment and share what you learned for a chance to win! In the meantime, enjoy all of our awesome MAKE SOMETHING COOL photos from yesterday. Thank you for playing along!

Congratulations to all of our winners and thank you to everyone who entered! There are more chances to win. Here are our themes for the rest of the week…

  • Thursday: SCIENCE FUN
Since we’re all going to be learning from home next week, we’d like to let YOU be the teacher. Find a (parent approved) science experiment you can do with items you already have at home. Complete the experiment and share a photo plus a caption that sums up what you learned. Enter your photo for a chance to win. We can’t wait to learn from YOUR mad science skills!
  • Friday: PEOPLE & PETS
Think back to all of the favorite things you found to do at home this week and all of the photos you’ve captured. Is there someone who you loved spending a little extra time with? Did your mom, dad, brother, sister or pet make you smile this week? Snap a photo of that person, people or pet and send it it for a chance to win. If they don’t want their picture taken? Feel free to make them a mask or costume from things you have around the house and take their picture in disguise. Raid the dress-up chest, pull out pieces from past Halloween costumes. Have fun because anything goes and thanks for sharing!

Entering the contest is easy. Simply Upload your photo and caption via our contest entry form and we’ll ask guest judges to help us choose the daily winner (or we may decide to pick our winner at random). We’ll share the photos, announce the winner plus reveal our new theme at the start of the next day. Click here or simply submit your entry with this form…
