106. Good Vibes: A Message to You Rudy – The Specials, 1979

It’s Friday after what’s been a long week! Things have been so crazy around here, I actually googled whether Mercury is in retrograde. Anyway, now that the weekend is here, things are looking up. A little rain in Saturday’s forecast is no match for a pep in your step, right? So I think it’s time for some weekend vibes. I was thinking back to a song that always puts me in a good mood and The Specials came to mind.

Post The Specials - Rudy, A Message to You

Formed in 1977, The Specials blend danceable ska and rocksteady beats with punk’s energy, edge and attitude. My favorite Specials song was their 1979 cover of Dandy Livingstone’s 1967 rocksteady song, “A Message to You, Rudy“.

This song brings me back to college and, this week, I had an epiphany!  I can easily insert any of my kids’ names into the lyrics instead of “Rudy” and sing this song as a warning or punishment when they start to get sassy.  Sounds like torture to me!

Stop your messing around
Better think of your future
Time you straighten right out
Creating problems in town

Rudy Billy, a message to you

Do you have any favorite tunes to kick off the weekend?  If so, please share in the comments box below. Happy Friday and thanks for being here, Liz

  1. Oh WOW, Liz, did this post make me smile. I do the same thing with the lyrics to “A Message To You Rudy” – I was even in a band for years with a guy named Rudy, so I didn’t even have to change the words. 🙂 Thanks for the reminder of happy, more carefree times – don’t the years go by too fast?

  2. Thanks for commenting, Karen! I was just wondering whether posting something about music more regularly might be a healthy exercise. I was in New Orleans for a wedding last weekend and the second line jazz bands we saw on the street were awesome. What are some songs that remind you have happy, more carefree times?
